    Ready to purchase jointer.

OK, sold some old stuff on Ebay, and LOML has given me "permission" to buy another tool! I think it's time to get a jointer, I don't have one now. Here's what I need, a recommendation for purchase. I have $350 to spend. Can I get a good floor jointer for this amount of money, or do I have to sell some blood or something else to increase my budget? BTW, the Sears deal everybody has been cashing in on doesn't help, because there aren't any in the state of Arizona. I know, I called them all!

Thanks in advance for your help.

Have them ship it. I think I read it was only $65. Then you will have money to spare.

Another alternative is to look in the local classifieds or on Craigslist for slightly used tools. Someone had a Ridgid jointer listed on Craigslist for $250. I bought a partly assembled, entry-level Delta 6" jointer for $150 here in the Bay Area that I'm delighted with.

Look in the bargains alert for the past 3 months
Lowes/delta are having promo rebates and gift certs for a total of $60 off the Delta JT360,
Sign up for a 10% mover's coupon (you don't actually have to move, you might just be thinking about it) it'll come by e-mail
I think the promos good until May 1? (I posted all the links in the bargain alert thread) It's probably not the best $350 jointer out there but I got mine for $255 (retail at $349), its a pretty good jointer for $255.

I have the sears version of that pelgrem, and I have to say that it's been great. I would have liked a depth indicator, but aside from that, it's been a champ. I got it for 170$ or something in that area.

For 350$, give a good look at the Ridgid, it's a nice jointer in that exact price range.

I'd look at the Ridgid. It has a more substantial fence support than the Sears or lower priced Delta. They're also offering gift card rebates.

You might also look into a Grizzly, but it'll be a tad more than $350.

I've been using the stationary HF 6" jointer for almost a year, and I've been very happy with it. With 20% off coupon, you can get it for $160, which is what I paid for it. The fence is not as easy to adjust, and assembling the stand can be difficult.

Can the fence on the HF jointer slide forward? Or does it only pivot on a single pivot pt and rotate to permit 90 / 45 ? From what I recall it does not look like you can slide it forward.

I got the Delta X5 6" jointer not long ago - the overall price was $321 and that included a very nice mobile stand. I immediatly used it on some 5 ' 6" long 5/4 red oak boards and am very happy with the tool. Also the sears jointer at the $104 price is just unbeatable. IMHO - "most" of the 6" floor standing jointers are going to give you close to the same functionality. There may be some slight differences / advantages / disadvantages but I think most will perform well for you. The HD Ridgid jointer is a nice tool also, and may be something you can get your hands on locally.

I have a delta jt160 BT jointer that I'll sell you real cheep if that's the direction you want to go !

I'll second the Ridgid Jointer. If you can get a 20% off coupon on eBay, you will be under $300. I'm extremely pleased with mine and the fence movement is the best I've seen in this price range.

Dunno what your shop space is, but if up to now you made do without a jointer up to now and think you can wait some more....

I'd wait for another 'tool allowance' and go for an 8" jointer. Grizzly has one for $650, plus $140 shipping. (Unfortunately, nearest to you Grizzly store is in Bellingham, WA, so local pickup option is out). It will be the last joiter you'll ever need. 2" extra width by itself is not much, but it has over 200lbs and 30" of table length on any 6" jointer out there - a real pro machine. Long boards seem to joint themselves on it.

Another satisfied Ridgid owner here. I bought mine because it was inexpensive ($300 after a then-current rebate), readily at hand (local purchase, no shipping charges), and a good fit for my shop (the long-bed Powermatic 54A that I really wanted, and was prepared to pay for, would not have fit, no way no how). My vague plan at the time was to use the Ridgid until I built my new shop in a few more years and saved up my pennies for an 8" jointer. But the Ridgid has performed so well that I may hang onto it even longer than originally planned, and make my next step up a 12" machine.
