Stashing 6 inch rules in handy places

I keep a couple of 6 inch stainless steel rules handy.

On in the miter slot on the router table, I don't use that slot for miter gage much

I have a metric folding rule I use for calibrating the table saw and miter saw fences. Otherwise I cut a setup block or make a story stick for every project because I've found through the years I tend to read tape measures and rulers wrong when I'm thinking of other things.

I do have a set of steel rulers also, but they are rarely used.

I find my most often use for them is determining the screw lengths I can use without poking out the backside. Usually screws come in 1/4" length increments. so these are fine for that.

Also for double checking cutter depth and width settings made with setup bars, calipers, and depth gauges for sanity check.

I keep a 12 inch SS rule in one of the cavities of the tall fence of my table saw. I use it mostly for saw setups. The saw sits pretty much in the middle of the small shop, so it is handy from everywhere. The other SS rules and the two FatMax tape measures hang on the pegboard wall next to the fixed workbench at the end of the shop.

I have stainless steel rules from 6" to 24" and aluminum in 3', 4', and 5' and use them all rather than a tape measure. My favorites are Westcott because the end is the beginning of the measure. Some rules begin a bit inside of the edge. I've cut or ground those so they start at 0. My shop apron has a pocket I made specifically for a 6" Westcott and use it whenever the apron is on, and I rarely don't have it on when I'm in the shop. If I'm working in there, the eye protection goes on, and then the apron. The apron has the dust collection remote in it, so it's enforced wearing. I have two Fastcap tape measures, and rarely use them, so have to organize a search for them when I need them.

Tehnically a rule starts measuring right from its edge. and a ruler starts a little way in from the edge of the material.

So in the future buy rules, not rulers
