Hey, he brought his helpers to work!
Looks great already!! Is the insulation up or is that just the underside of the steel roof?

Did you use thermal blocks at the purlins, or did you just drape the batts over them?

The batts were just draped and stretched over the prulins from side to side ... Cold isn't really a problem here ... heat on the other hand ...

Understood, Fort Worth isn't exactly in the Arctic. A little extra (thermal blocks) over the purlins would have helped to keep the roof panels from transferring heat to the framing.

You probably didn't have to meet energy code like an occupied metal building should. Texas has adopted the 2009 IECC, and it calls for thermal blocks in some of the prescriptive insulation options. I went round and round with the builder on this VFW hall I drew recently. He kept saying 'that's not how we used to do it'. I'm glad they finally decided to go with foam insulation. It'll be worth it in the long run for them.

Yeah there was no specification on insulation ... I could have opted not to insulate at all ... it would have made an excellent oven in August.

August?!?, it would've felt like you were in a broiler by the end of May, by August you would have been totally dessicated.

I'm preaching to the choir, but you are going to be really glad you did the insulation. Have you got any heating or cooling planned?

Well $$$$ is the obstacle at this point .., next will be minimal electricity to pass inspection ... and by minimal I literally mean 1 4' 4 bulb T8 fluorescent fixture, a switch and a plug. That was what I turned into the city and what I will get inspected. The building at that point will be a large open "storage building" for things like garden tractor, trailers, implements, yard tools and the like.

Then ... over the next several months I will get more electric, dust collection, compressed air supply lines, cabinets ... and finally at some point begin to move tools in ... after that ... I will address the heating and cooling aspect ... a long ways down the road at this point ...

                      "Building" is finished ...

lots of work now on getting electricity hooked up, lights (I have 20 4' 4 bulb T8 fixtures to suspend from the ceiling), dust collection setup, compressed air piping, cabinets (I plan to make these myself - a new woodworking experience!!) and getting tools moved to new locale ... I figure about 6 more months and if nothing else gets in the way (like life) it should be fairly functional by Spring 2013.

                      I'm happy!

Looks great! You probably already have but I would do a layout for all the tools you have now + the ones you plan or even might get and try and use that layout from the start. Especially for DC and to a somewhat lesser degree electricity, it is good to be able to set it and not move it much if at all. With the height you have, however, you could run DC overhead.

Major congrats Bade!! When you do the lighting layout, I would consider at least two if not more banks of lights, that way you don't have to burn all 80 bulbs at once!

Does your man door have a threshold? Looks like there's light coming in under the door. May need to adjust the height of the sweep, keep the critters out.

How do you plan on attaching paneling on the walls, ceilings?

Yes there is a threshold. I took the pic before it was placed.

Definitely going to do two separate light circuits, North and South.

I'll post layout plans for tools later in separate thread but will be a while before I am at that happy point.

                                Trench Day ....

Today was "Trench Day" ... 208' (more or less), 30" deep, 6" wide ....

It was really kind of anti-climatic ... the guy brought the big Rock Saw on an 18 wheeler, unloaded it, the operator and "crew chief" arrived, we discussed where it was going to go ... they fired up the saw and in about two hours, it was all over but the shouting ... considering the "by the hour" cost ... it's a pretty pricey trench but no way to do it other than this as it's all rock (limestone mostly) ... next up is to get the utility pole erected and then get the electrical done.
