Poured the slab today ...
Today was a big day as far as I am concerned ... after almost 5 months of "planning" ... the slab was poured this morning. I was amazed at the 34 meter pump truck and how cool it was that the operator had a remote control with a couple of joy sticks that he used to move the boom around ... very cool.
I had to laugh when I saw how much concrete this slab took ... 44 yards!!
Mostly because the slab plan was "engineered" as required by the city code and was in everyone's opinion (except the engineer...) way way way over-engineered. The concrete contractor told me a typical "non-engineered" slab of this type would be about 30 yards of concrete ... one thing I can say ... "it ain't going anywhere!!"

Bade, whats the average slab thickness??
shop is 30x40 = 1,200 sq ft
44 cu yards were placed
cubic yard = 27 cubic feet (or 27 sq ft at 1' thick)
44 cu yards x 27 = 1180 sq ft at 1' thick!
Assuming average slab thickness of 4" for ~80% of the slab:
1000 sq ft at 4" thick = 333 cubic feet or 12 cubic yards leaving 32 cubic yards for footers??
seems a stretch...
Assuming average slab thickness of 6" for same:
18 cu yards for slab leaving 26 cu yards for footers??
hmmm.....
do you have any idea how wide, deep and long your footers are? It just seems a stretch!I think in straight lines, but dream in curves

Slab Plan
I watched 5 trucks come up and dump to the pump ... the last only used about 4 yards ... (not that it makes that much difference but the slab is actually 40' 3" x 30' 3" to accommodate the building requirements)
The slab plan PDF is too big to attach here ...
The specs call for external & internal beam width of 12", external and internal beam depth of 30", 5" thickness. There are two internal 40' beams and a single 30' beam (divides the slab into six sections).
The concrete guy told me most slabs of this ilk (not "engineered plan") took about 30 yards... he felt this was way over engineered ... but it's what the city approved for the permit ..."Like an old desperado, I paint the town beige ..." REK

I get that a lot from subs and builders, especially ones that do a lot of work in unincorporated areas where they think nothing has to be engineered. (Just because nothing is inspected or enforced doesn't mean it doesn't have to comply with the state adopted building code...)
What you described for the grade beams and slab isn't too uncommon. I would assume the internal beams were 10' o.c.. You probably could have gotten away with a thinner slab, but it would probably have required more dirtwork, possibly a few feet of select fill. I bet you've got a lot of expansive clay in the soils down there.

I see it know Bade, the footers being 12" wide by 30" deep and having the perimeter plus the internal grid adds up to about 23 cu yards in the perfect world
With the rest of the slab at 5" thick, that is one **** of a slab. When you bolt down that building it should be near tornado proof!

The barn raising has begun ....
Just one pic ... the erection crew came out today and started setting things up. They found a "bulge" on the slab that has to be corrected before they start sheeting the building... apparently not a major thing, I contacted the concrete guy and he is sending out someone to "saw" it straight ... anyway ... the crew chief today claimed it'll take about 2 more full days to get it done ... we shall see. They will be back Tuesday after Labor Day.

Starting to take shape ....
Should start sheeting tomorrow ... I got the impression they had about 3 days work left which surprises me a bit ... I had been told the whole thing should take about 3 days ... looking more like 6.

Those pre-engineered metal buildings do go up quick.
I drew the plans for a VFW post our dart association works with. The 60x100 building was framed, roofed, and sided in about a week and a half. Their slab was finally done about a week before yours.ErikComment

What is he working by himself?! LOL just kidding, sometimes those doors can take forever to get just right... After the panelling is done, wiring and insulation, mechanical and plumbing then move in!

Maybe it's going a little slower than planned, but I have to say I am getting pumped just seeing it coming together. You have to be VERY excited about this!!! You are living a dream many of us have!!! I'm happy for you.

@Crockett -- you are of course 100% correct ... I am indeed very excited! The progress isn't really slow it's just like Christmas morning waiting for the grown-ups to "wake up!!" so we can get to the business of opening the presents!
The larger shop has been a dream and obsession for a couple of years now and I am blessed to be able to see it come to fruition.
The walls are all done now and roofing should start tomorrow ... if the weather holds and I don't have any OTHER unforeseen problems (one of the 14' sheeting panels was split right down the middle and had to be replaced ... the Mueller salesman brought a replacement out to the house this morning ... really good customer service I highly recommend them) ... the building itself should be complete by the end of this week.
Next up (after city building inspection - structural) will be to get the 220' 24" deep 6" wide trench cut with a big rock saw. That will accommodate the 2" pvc conduit housing the AL 4/0 4/0 2/0 wire run from the street where I will have a 35' pole set to hold the 200 Amp meter loop ... (and yes I am aware of possible voltage drop issues with that length run - I may just get 125Amp sub-panel inside ... have to discuss with electrician)

It's a cave ...
Got the roof installed today ... will get the roof vents and rest of the trim tomorrow and then 3 windows and I believe the "building" part will be complete ... looking good to me!
