Shop daydreams... what would you change?

I did a bad thing...
I wasn't EVEN going to the pipe dream territory. That model is FAR from done..Please like and subscribe to my YouTube channel. Please check out and subscribe to my Workshop Blog. -
I'd add more task specific lighting and less general lighting. I'd also have more large assembly benches.Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work. - Thomas EdisonComment

For me just getting a dedicated space that I dont have to share with our cars would be a daydream. I would love to be able to have my BT3 permanently setup with extension tables or heaven forbid one day a 3hp cabinet saw!!
Also like tom a nice flat assembly table.Jon
Phoenix AZ - It's a dry heat

I assume the empty space is office space with computer, drafting dable and all. I would add a finishing area with proper dust control and ventilation.
As for tools as long as we are day deaming:
Big lathe
CNC machine
Shaper
Router tables
More wood storage
so much for nowOften in error - Never in doubt

My dream shop will have a floating floor, with 10"-12" of space below the shop floor. This will be MUCH easier on my legs and back, and allow for all DC and electrical to be run in the floor.
As long as I'm dreaming, it will be on a beach somewhere in the tropics, with very large windows.JoeComment

If your shop is on a tropical beach, you don't require any DC. Just position the tools so you stand upwind of the trade winds.
Really, when I consider the inherent cost savings and health benefits it seems very reasonable...
For now, I'd settle for having a 20' x 20' space to call my own.Doug Kerfoot

You should put the bathroom nearer the main entrance. Because you're going to crap every time you walk into that place.
Agree on more large assembly tables. And either more tools, or group them closer together, or -- gasp! -- consider reducing the square footage a bit. With the size you have now, and the tooling spread out as shown, you'll walk yourself to death.
(This is SketchUp, right? I think I recognize some of the models, like the jointer and Grizzly band saw ... did you draw the others yourself?)Last edited by LarryG; 06-27-2008, 07:40 AM.LarryComment

Uhhh... 12 each 8-foot long flourescents wouldn't be enough?????
There would be raking lights set up in the finishing room also.
Nope, it's a finishing area.Last edited by Stan; 06-27-2008, 07:52 AM.Comment

Well since it is a dream, Where Hiedi the Tool Time girl?
Seriously, a couple of things come to mind. One is the floating floor, so power can be put under the floor, some one else came up with that. The other thing this would let you do is run dust collection under the floor to things like a cabient saw.
Rubber mats in front of everytool would be nice. Our warehouse guys have some that are very very soft, and cumfy on the feet.
I would Build a small closet around the dust collector, to remove as much noise as possible from the shop. If I really wanted to go crazy, the closet would have a door to the outside for emptying it, that way the dust stays outside.
If you are builing this from scratch, then I would put in tall ceilings. If I had a buck for every scrap in my garage ceiling from flipping long wood, I could buy a powermatic saw. Also Taller ceilings = taller shelves = more storage.
How about some sky lights, and a good filtering system on the heating and cooling system.

Daydreaming is fun, and planning your dream shop is even more fun. However, I was able to build my dream shop about 10 years ago when we retired and moved out to the country. I ran a thread with a shop tour a year or so ago, but this winter took a lot of new photos of my shop and home-made shop cabinets. Here is a link.
While it is a long way from the perfect shop, it sure beats the other three shops I had before this one - and it IS nice to finally have enough space to spread out a little! Your thread just made me think that you might like to see that dreams do come true sooner or later. Here's wishing that everyone who reads this may get his dream shop sooner rather than later.Last edited by Tom Clark; 06-29-2008, 08:03 PM.Comment
