I'm replacing the 20x20 with a 24x36 this summer. Should have enough room for my "toys". Am planning a heated slab with everything from the house buried in the ground.

Are you planning to run in slab electric and DC piping?
After 30 plus years in the auto repair businesess and 10 years tinkering with woodworking I've aquired a number of items that I feel need to fit into the new space that's coming. Pictures will be up soon.

Mig welder
4 benches:
1 - 10' long x 32" deep x 29" high (wood, general purpose, weighs a bunch!)
2 - Welding bench, 6' long x 36" high x 30" deep (also very heavy)
3 - Steel mechanics bench same dimensions as the welding bench
4 - small woodworking bench used at the local school wood shop
BT3100 table saw
Home made router table with steel stand
Bench top drill press (to be mounted on the ten foot bench above)
Makita compound miter saw with portable bench.
So much for the big items. I am concerned with shop layout as I will be sharing space with 2 vehicles. I figure on using the back half plus some (24x20?) for the shop area. I have 2 8-foot light fixtures that I want to use over my primary work areas. Suggestions for layout are welcome.
Had not considered either one. Would probably do DC piping, any rec size on material specs for tubing in slab or above?
I'd love to have my DC piping underground. I think 6" PVC would be the way to go. This would require you to somewhat figure out your shop layout a head of time.
As far as electric, running couple 12 gauge to the center of the shop would be helpful IMHO. My DC connection for TS and jointer comes down from the ceiling in middle of the shop. I run my electrical conduit beside the DC pipe. I'd love to have those out of the way.

That sounds great.
I'd consider two, side-by-side 4-inch PVC for the same cross section volume/air handling as 6" but less depth into the floor. Could save you two inches of concrete volume on the whole garage.
Power in the floor would also be great, like 2 circuits mentioned.
You could bury in the foundation or as an alternative, you can make a trench big enough for the 2x4" PVC and wires. Put a 3/4" rabbet in the top of the trench and have a wooden cover in place so you can get to the trench in case of blockage, wire additions etc. yet still roll equipment and carts around.

In this example would you split your 6" main to the (2) 4" and then rejoin them where they come out of the ground to 6" again?
I wasn't thinking of a 6" slab, rather just putting the 6" pipe a few inches below the pour line (or bottom of the concrete slab). Example : put 6" PVC 3 - 4 " in ground/gravel and then pour 4" slab on top.
