Kirby’s Shed: 4. The Back wall

These pics were a bit difficult to take - couldn't get back far enough.

The jointer/thicknesser is a 10" Elektra-Beckum. A luxury item for me - I've only used it about 10 times in 12 years - but essential at the time.

Is that a garden hose attached to the compressor? If so, why?

Do you mean that you've only needed to joint boards 10" wide 10 times in 12 years, but use it for narrower stock on a regular basis? Or do you have another jointer/planer? If if you have another jointer/planer, why wouldn't you just use the E-B for everything?

            Hey Rod,

I still can't believe that you really work there. Are you sure that its not just a film set.

But in any event, you have a fantastic shop (shed).

10 times all-up - the largest was 6" wide. I don't buy rough-sawn timber. And now I have my Wide drum sander I will probably never use the jointer again

It happens to be the color of our "quality" air hoses in Oz

BTW - My next compressor will have at least twice that tank capacity - I didn't know enough at the time I bought it.

I hear that Rod. I have one of the smaller 2 tank compressors. If and when I get another one....it will be about a 15 gallon + job.

I see 2 problems with this:

                      1. 240V 50Hz
                      2. You would need a second (or first?) House mortgage to pay for the shipping

Rod, you seem to take the same approach I do: make a little storage rack or box or shelf or whatever and fit it in wherever it'll go, without everything necessarily sharing the same design or detailing. My execution is a bit more, ah, crude that yours, though.

Love the pivoting screwdriver rack. Is that because some of them are hard to reach, over the jointer/planer?

Also, do the rustication joints in the MDF wall panels occur only at seams between the individual sheets, or are some of them just for show?

Said it before but here it is again. There is no way Rod actually builds anything in there. He has another shop. I've actually tried and it is impossible to keep a shop that clean.

The rack lets me store the screwdrivers up close to the hammers, without worrying about space to lift them out

"If you can't hide a joint, feature it!" Only the sheet seams have the 1/4" roundover. (Love the word "rustication" - never seen it before).

                              Man, that's a sweet shop.

I bet a lot of guys are beating their heads against the wall when you say the jointer is a luxury that you rarely use
