I can get the 4" wire-reinforced clear hose (from WoodCraft/Rockler) over the end of sewer&drain pvc (sched. 35), by removing a few turns of the reinforcing wire. It's a snug fit, but I usually use a hose clamp to keep it in place. A 6" long piece of PVC stuck half-way into the hose makes for a quick-connect fitting.

That's where I put my blast gates. Makes a nice transition.

Ditto JR - blast gates. I just completed my DC setup. Used S&D everywhere except to connect up to the shop tools and the dc itself. Blast gates fit perfectly inside the 4" S&D and the 4" flex lines I am using.

Most of the companies into dust collection sell an adapter fitting that makes the transition clean and neat. No need to jury-rig (unless you enjoy the challenge).
...eight, nine, TEN! Yep! Still got all my fingers!

when you guys talk about 4" S&D, the 4" S&D I see at the local box stores is 10' long and flared at one end (to accept another section w/o a fitting). Is that the stuff?

If your only tool is a hammer, you tend to treat all problems as if they were nails.

                Yep, that's the stuff!

Fittings are also thinner than the usual schedule 40 stuff -- sometimes made of polystyrene.

I have been taking a piece of piping and sawing a small slice-lengthwise out of it, fitting it into the two pipes and taping it with-"TA DA " duct tape. Works for me.

You use the correct adapter, that's how.
