Shop in progress

I recently build my house, it had a three car garage that I will be transforming into the workshop. Here are some of the pics of the cabinets that my wife and I are building for the shop. They are made out of paint grade birch. I will post the progress as it happens. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated and considered. Thank You

You have a wonderful wife...if I had a 3 car garage, my wife would make me buy 2 more cars to park in it...and my truck would still be outside.

Looking good!

Loads of storage, which is a very good thing. And it looks like it's nice and bright in there. I do have a couple of suggestions, if you haven't thought of them already.

Make sure your bench surface comes forward of the drawers by a few inches. This will give you some clamping surface.

You might want to find a way to add a woodworking vise to the bench. It can be very handy.

You might want to consider a little shelf at the back of the benchtop. Just a few inches high and maybe six inches deep. This will make a great place for screw bins, parts boxes, battery charger, etc.

Get more power! You'll want to have access to at least three or four 15/20 amp circuits.

I was watching one of those cable TV shows that attempt to organize the client's house/room to get rid of clutter and make the space more efficient.

One of the points that the host pointed out is that we tend to put stuff on shelves over a desk, bench, etc. The host's observation was - Why do we put shelves where we do and then put things on the shelves that we can't reach.

I have shelves that I can't reach without a stool or a 'grabber', and I always wonder why I do it.

Great looking work bench. My question to rsj is, did you do this from your head or did you get a plan somewhere. I'd like to build something very similar in my "one" car garage, but I'd probably need a plan to make the frame and drawers etc seeing I'm not a cabinet maker by a long shot. I envy your skills as well as your work bench. Hopefully this summer I'll be able to build a new work station for myself. Just curious on how much you estimate this will cost you all said and done. Once again, good job, and thanks for sharing the photos.

I am doing this as I go, I do not have any plans. I built my cabinets in the house, so these are so much easier that I am thinking of doing this on the side.

Just curious on how much you estimate this will cost you all said and done.

I don't know because I am not finished yet. I have used 14 sheets of birch plywood(3/4 x 4' x 8') at $28 each and 4 Baltic birch (1/2 X 5' x 5') at $21 each plus the paint and hardware. The shop measures 28' x 30'.

Ok thanks, so for around $500.00 you got yourself one heck of nice set-up. Imagine what it would cost you if you had somebody make it for you or buy it ready made. You are saving a ton of money doing it yourself like that. Once again, great job. I hope to have the skills to make something similar this summer. Framing of the lower part with the drawers etc would be my biggest headache I think, seeing I've never built something like that. The problem with me is, at the price of wood these days, I can't affort to trial and error too much, which is why I was wondering about the plans. Thanks again for the info.
