My dad was a highschool teacher (math) way back in the early/mid 1960's. One of his classes held their 50th class reunion this past year and invited him as the guest of honor. He was thrilled to attend and apparently had a wonderful time and was very moved by the appreciation his former students showed.
At that celebration the past students presented him with several mementos.
My mother asked if I could find some way to "display" these items which included a yearbook, a brick from the old school and several other not so flat items.
My dad struck on the idea that he wanted to include the old treadle sewing machine his mother passed down to him AND some the redwood that he had engineered and incorporated into a combination picnic table and fold out pair of benches. He built this around the same period and had managed to salvage the redwood all these years because he felt he would use it for "something sometime...".
I've begun the build phase of a coffee table/display case ... The top will be 1/4" tempered glass. The wood is all redwood and I will spline the corners with something like mesquite.
Dry fit ...
