Stupid walls are only 2x4 stud construction... That limits me to R13 in fiberglass... Oh well...

You could fill the cavity with R13 and go on top of it with rigid under your sheetrock or plywood sheathing. 1" of the rigid foam will give you about another R5, which is also continuous and performs a little bit better than just cavity insulation. Wood isn't very conductive, but it does conduct some heat. Probably not in the budget though.

In a 2x4 wall cavity, which my brother's house was, youc an still fill with 3" of closed cell foam. At R7 per inch, that's an R21. Also, you have the benefits of it improving structure, dampening noise, and sealing all air leaks (which will give an R21 in foam a better insulative value that R20 in fiberglass).
Though, it's definitely more $$.Comment
