    Tape residue

    Good Morning,

What do you use to remove tape residue from your projects?

What kind of tape? For masking tape residue, alcohol such as rubbing alcohol will dissolve the adhesive residue and is less likely to harm the finish than some of the other products mentioned.

my general rule is try stuff in order of aggressiveness,
usually try rubbing your finger first, some stuff just rolls off with pressure.
            Then try rubbing alcohol.
Then try stuff called Goo Gone - that generally removes most label glues.
After that you need to go to nasty stuff, like lighter fluid, mineral spirits, turpentine, acetone etc that generally I don't like to use and or even keep around for flammable and vapor reasons.

WD-40 removes price tag labels and most other adhesives.

                Thanks for the replys everyone.

I use all of the above but was checking to see if maybe there was another silver bullet. I have not had any negative affect on finish from any of these items but don't want to find out the hard way.

By the way the tape I am generally trying to clean up is double sided or carpet tape.

The world's best kept secret, RUBBER CEMENT THINNER.
You can probably get it at an art supply store (if they still exist), or try a craft's store like AC Moore.
Although is is flammable, it doesn't smell as bad as all the other stuff and won't mess your hands or the work.

If you have any "leftover" freon tp-35 - it works well.

I have had great success using the same tape and 'dabbing' it over the left over adhesive. It seems to pull the unwanted residue off the item.

You beat me to that suggestion. For sticker residue etc. I sometimes use scotch tape, often works ok.

kInd of like using majic marker to remove majic marker, works quite well. Of course it only works on solid surfaces like metal. I'll have to give this a try some time.
