    Barrel hinge?

I planning on utilizing 10 mm concealed barrel hinges on a small box project. How far away from the back edge should the hole be drilled for the hinges thus how much wood is necessary in front and behind the hinge? The instructions are vague in terms of stating just drill 10mm holes/10mm deep with a minimum board thickness of 1/2". Also, any tips on using these hinges would be appreciated. Thanks.

1/2" board thickness is only 12.7 mm so 10 mm holes would leave a very tiny 1mm wall on either side of the hole.

I don't think I'd use anything much less than 3/4" which would leave a wall thickness for perfectly centered holes of ~4.5mm which is about .177 or a hair less than 3/16ths wall thickness.

This box is about 1/2" thick. I used 5mm hinges and chamfered the back side to the outer edge of the holes.

For 1/2" stock, 10mm hinges will work OK. Barrel hinges can work out to be a great little hinge if installed properly, but offer no adjustment to speak of. Using the correct size will start you off.

That measurement is easily taken by aligning the two parts together. Using a combo square or a try square, knife mark a line at the centers of both pieces, for both hinges. Then, knife mark the center of the thickness of the two pieces. Now you have drill points. Do the drilling with a drill press. You don't need any fancy jigs.

Here are a few sites with some installation details that will help:

The following link is an example of the fly box that I am talking about making. It is the first box on the left, and all it consists of in terms of construction is routing out the center of two pieces of 4" x 6" material that are approximately 5/8" thick thus leaving a lip around the outside for hinges as well a magnets to keep it closed. The barrel hinge would be in material that is 5/8" thick, and what-ever the width you want for the remaining edge left from routing out the center. I was interested in how much material does the barrel hinge need in back as well as in front of it thus if the edge should ultimately be 5/8", 3/4", etc. with the hinge centered in it? My initial post should have been more clear. Thanks.

            Ron,

Rockler and Lee Valley usually have PDFs to download as instructions for using most of their hardware.

If you go to the "More Info" tab, you'll get a click on link for Technical Data, this will download a pdf version of the install specs for these barrel hinges.

            This should help.

            Good luck,

            Bruce

good call bruce. the rockler page has a link to a page that covers the installation as well as specifying what model barrel hinge is to be used with what thickness material.
