I may have messed up making a toy car...

    I did something dumb...

I was trying to whip up something unique for a good friend's son's 5th B-day present. This kid LOVES cars, and Spiderman...

I have a MESS of Spiderman stickers I got from the craft store, and I laid out a patter for a race car which I whipped out of scrap on the band saw / oscillating sander tonight...

THEN I looked to see what is that funny looking sawdust...

    Oh crud...

You guessed it, the scrap was PT...

Is it safe to prime / paint this and give it to a child or should I start over?

I think I know the answer, and I feel REALLY stupid for doing this...

But I must admit, I have some really nice curves on this cutout going... Reminds me of the Pinewood Derby car my Dad & I made when I was in the Cub Scouts, or Speed Racer's Mach V...

Which brings me to the next question... Where can I get some big old fat tires / wheels for this thing? Most of the wooden wheels I have seen are more appropriate for a Model T model and not a Race car...

Oh well, call this one practice, and do a glue up I guess. I am pretty sure I have some Poplar I can laminate up in the shop...

If it's the same size as a pinewood derby, you could use pinewood derby wheels. They've change alot over the years. You can get them at Hobby Lobby in either Texas City or in Houston, unless there is one closer to you.

I think there is a Hobby Lobby on the northbound feeder road of I-45 at NASA Road 1 in Houston, which isn't too far...

And yeah, I am starting over...

I'd start over rather than give someone dear a toxic toy...

Here's some sources for wooden and plastic "hobby" craft wheels if that's what you are looking for. Meisel has a good selection including these treaded wheels:

Already started over. Did a glue up for the block before going to bed last night, took it out of the clamps this morning. Looks good so far... Using Ponderosa Pine sourced from a reclaimed waterbed frame. Need to take it to the miter saw to cut the angles for the nose of the car tonight, then print the pattern back out, plane the block down 1/16" each way, lay on the pattern, and get after it on the band saw, and sander again...

The couple that are the parents of this child are good long time friends. They asked my ex and I to be his God Parents when he was born... (Followed very quickly by that whole marriage thing going bad, but that is a different story...)

I am not worried about a 5 year old chewing on a wooden toy. And I am going to prime / paint the car when done, including a coat or three of poly... But I just had the creeping feeling that SOMETHING was wrong with the block I started with. The wood didn't look different per se, but it DID produce greenish sawdust. I am now VERY grateful for the shop vac HEPA system...

I am not certain what paint to use on this. I am figuring on using spray paint over Kilz. Then using Testor's model paint, I can hand stripe the web pattern on the car. The other option, would be to use an oil based paint, and my air brush. I have never brushed on wood though. I figure I would need a heavy coat or two of primer to keep the wood from soaking up the color coat...

If you are using an air brush you could use AutoAir Colors http://www.autoaircolors.com/, They are water based and easy to clean up, have a great variety of colors. Here is thelink for dealers http://www.autoaircolors.com/dealer/dealer_frames.html
