    Precautions for hurricane wind

What precaution the people take to protect them self from harsh hurricane wind?
I would suggest installing hurricane shutters would protect them to a great extent. What else can be done any suggestions.

            Rosy,

I guess the answers would pretty much depend on exactly what you're talking about... Are you building, existing house or what? Are you talking about just protecting the windows, the family, what?

I'm up here in NY's Southern Tier, where we've only had two hurricanes in my 60-plus years, but we get a lot of high winds, wind shear effects, heavy rains, and other hurricane-like effects.

For winds, the house itself needs to be built to certain standards, having the roof and other structural members properly anchored to one another. While "shutters" can be just the thing under some conditions, plywood is the most often material used to protect windows; but one must remember that a piece of lumber or other debris can actually penetrate a block-wall.

(Our so-called storms are rather freaky sometimes, a year ago I came home to find the aluminum fascia completely ripped loose from the roof gable, where it had been firmly fastened for more than 20 years, but none of the furniture on the deck (just below) was even moved. About a decade ago, there were more than a hundred tall trees that were just snapped near their tops, as if an airplane had flown over and sheared them off. Winds can be really strange sometimes.)

Still, I see all these frantic people on the News when the hurricanes are coming, and I think to myself, "If I lived there (I wouldn't), I think I'd be having certain materials in storage and the ability to easily bolt them into place. Unfortunately, I don't know how you'd protect your house if it was subject to storm surges or flooding.

Best thing for the family though is to "evacuate".

I much prefer to live on high ground in the rolling hills of NY State where all we have to worry about is unemployment, taxes, human crazies, and the occasional "weird" weather conditions.

Use screws instead of nails in the construction! It WORKS!

Rosy, I have a full lot of spare hurricane shutters to sell, are you interested? I could make it cheap enough for you. Hurry before it sells out!

I'd say to stock up on FISHING supplies as well. Don't underestimate the power of a small boat with a TROLLing motor either.

I probably wouldn't be following this thread, but we have so many hurricanes here in NW Indiana, I should be prepared. All the suggestions are appreciated.
