    Pony Barn

I have had plans sitting around for several years to a 12 x 16 Pony Barn to use as a garden shed / storage. My brother is moving in with us and is going to have the rooms at the end of the house.

Initially he was going to buy an Arrow shed so I could empty my work/storage room. After some discussion we decided it would be better to go ahead and put up the barn.

Over the last 3 weeks my sons and I got the slab down and I have the wall framing up. I was planning to build the roof trusses yesterday but needed to do some major cleaning on his bedroom and bathroom. Besides, my son had my truck in Wills Point to help pack and load the U-Haul for the move and I didn't want to put too much of a load on the roof rack of the Jeep.

I will pick up the 2x6 and plywood for the gussets tonight or tomorrow night. I should be able to have the trusses ready this week working evenings. starting Fiday I am off for 2 weeks and the building takes priority.

Excavation and forms set. Back fill was done with recycled concrete. Compacted nicely and it was FREE!

Had enough extra to pour a pad for a hot tub.

Wall framing up. Modification to the plans were to add a second window and change the front wall for sliding doors instead of the garage door called for.

As with all good projects, a new tool is required. I have a Kreg K4MS on order to build the doors.

Looking good Pappy, you might want to finish that hot tub first for those sore muscles, LOL but then again I heard that your weather is probably too hot for the tub right now. Do you have restrictions on building your own trusses, wind codes etc.? Or does it not matter for a non liveable structure? Best of luck, looks great so far

Nice work Don. That's real progress. Are you going to use the same roof material that you used on your house?

I built a 10'x12' which replaced an Arrow shed that got blown away during Wilma. I this product from Lowes. I'm suggesting it because it's not expensive, and very easy to install.

Is this going to replace the Playpen? Whatever the application, it looks like you are off to a good start...

          Looking good.

I didn't see any worklights? If you've been getting the string of 100+ days than we have I wouldn't even want to build that thing during the day, maybe mornings and evenings. I've done some stuff I need/want to do outside, but most of the time I retreat to the AC and say "It can wait!"

Let's see if I can answer everything.

              1. Hot tub needs a little work.

              2. Truss codes? Beats me, but i will folow the plans on them. Didn't even file a permit. Live in the county, inspection only required if I tie into the septic system.

              3. Roof will be tan R panel, same as the house.

              4. All storage for now and eventually garden shed with over head storage. Not to replace the Playpen but the Playpen's deck and side storage are going to get reworked over the next couple of weeks.

              5. high temps? 112 yesterday for only the 2nd time in history. I work outside in the heat everyday so I am used to it. Part of the placement was because that big Ash treee shades it from the afternoon sun.

              6. The shop building is still waiting for money and time. Did figure out that we can pour the slab ourselves and do a decent job. Will probably hire out the excavation and then pour it in 2 24 x 13 sections.

Go Don, you sir are hardcore, good for you! And separating the slab is a great idea, the larger the area the more likely you will be rushed to place and finish it but also it will get cracks.

Did you guys mix the concrete onsite? For your big slab you might just have several yards delivered and poured or pumped in. You'll get a more consistant mix and save a lot of time.

I had 5 yards delivered. When the truck pulled out thre might have been half a wheel barrow left in the drum. I ain't mixing anything over a yard.

                      Finally finished!

I do have one trim board to add in front that will cover and protect the door track and rollers. I haven't put it up yet because I am thinking about painting the corner boards, door frames, and window trim a darker color to add some contrast.

We moved most everything in on Saturday and Sunday.

That looks great. Nice work. Doing a darker trim sounds like it will add to the looks.

I was emailing the album link to my nephew this morning along with some info about the changes I made and it dawned on me that I missed a picture when I made the album.

The support board for the door track is beveled on top to keep rain water from standing and getting between the board and wall. My first attempt to bevel the face was done on the BT with less than stellar results. After setting up a quick jig, I cut the bevel on the new board with the planer.

I took 2 pieces of the first board, cleaned up the bevel and mounted them over the windows with a pair of corbels.
