Carport Room Diary - Updated 7 March

I will update this thread similar to the new shop diary. I am adding a room under the carport. I started the work this weekend. Didn't get quite as far as I wanted, but then all the fussy work is done. That kneewall was a major PITA. The concrete is out almost 1.5" side to side and it crowns in the middle. There's probably a faster way but what I did was get the bottom plate down, get the 2 end uprights and the top plate on. cut an upright just short and use it+ my crowbar to wedge the middle level, then mark and cut each upright. Oh, a mason did the brick work across the front. If I'd done it, it would be level but it would look like crap.

Ready for inspection. Floor is framed, what electrical rough-in needs it is done. Insulation is done. Mechanical is done. Framing is 2x10s 16" OC. Total length is 18'. There is a support wall at 9' and the joists are blocked. I was bouncing on it and there was absolutely no movement.

You need to fix the border edging on the bed!

Looks good so far. I built a 16' X 27' addition on our home, but I didn't take even 1 picture during the process. Now I wish I had done that.

I don't like that edging. My wife does and I haven't found anything I like well enough to replace it with.

I used to have that in front of a front window, and it's a PITA to keep the grass trimmed clean, and they fall over easy.

Looking good. By the way, do you ever do any small projects?

Sure I do! Big projects are just a lot of little ones. Do enough little ones and you've done one big one. The support wall was a small one. The HVAC was another small one. Framing the floor was a small one....

Looks good so far. Glad to see that type of edging is a pain to someone else besides me... LOML loves it, I hate it... Oh well...

One of the beams is in. This was the difficult one. I had two choices, either cut the joists back (basically reframe the floor) and drop it in from the top, or do what I did which was to cut through from the outside and slide it in under the joists. I will repair the brick later. The beams are 4 2x12s ganged together. The front one will be the easy one, relatively speaking. I will just add that in place of the band and use joist hangers on the joists.

Four 2x12's? That is one Helluva beam!

Yup. That is what the inspector says is needed to span 14' though. And that is the first one - there will be another out at the front where the band joist was.

What was thier justification about not letting the floor bear on the slab? No foundation drawings?
