I built some steps for my parents motor home to get access to the cab over sleeper part and put drawers in them. It added much needed storage.

That's pretty cool, but isn't that a long span of unsupported tread?

yeah, looks impractical from both the safety and access and the unsupported span/sag issues.

Yeah, it would be impractical if you're the type that weighs 240 LBS and makes a habit of running up and down stairs with a 200 LB dumbell in each hand.

That's a clever idea! I wonder if you could rig them to close automatically...

It would be easy to fix the unsupported tread issues. Just have a steel tread and recess it into the underside of the wood tread. That is a neat idea though.

I bet if they are all closed then there will be no issues. None of the stairs in my house have a middle stringers.

Pretty cool idea. I've ssen a variant using just a hinged tread.

In that photo, the stair doesn't appear to be all that wide. Just consider the size of the handrail and door handle stop and the shoes.

I like it! I could see some safety issues, but if you had someone in your house that doesn't always close doors or drawers,( no dear I really and not talking about you) I supposed some type of self closers could be installed. I would think this would be more stable than treads on a hinge.

Hey quit talking about my wife!

Okay seriously though... I have seen that with hinged treads instead of drawers in boats, and RVs. I never even considered that for residential, mostly because I live in a single story home...
