    MilDoc,

Pen and wood turners LOVE spalted wood! Don't think for a minute that the spalted oak is bad. Turners will often pay more for good spalted oak than regular oak. I know that there are several turners here that would love to help you with your decision!

Post a note in the "Turnings" section of this forum and you will get just as many replies, and maybe even some that will "help".

On the pen turning forum that I am a member of - <http://www.penturners.org/forum/portal.asp> spalted wood of any kind is always in demand.

I believe the way oak wilt works is that the fungus plugs the veins of the tree in the sap wood and kills the tree by starving it. The heart wood of the tree should be fine. If you can't afford a sawmill, some of them will work off a percentage. They cut the logs ande take 30% to 40 % of the yield to resell.
