    Wall Lumber --mail order hardwood

ust an FYI for anyone who is wanting to know. I have made four orders for hardwood from Wall Lumber in their 20 bd/ft bundles and have been very satisfied.

Maple, red oak, white oak and cherry.

The combo of my general distain for storing large quanities of lumber, my work schedule, lack of lumber hauling vehicle and scare local wood sources make this a perfect way to get my lumber.

I order over the phone and I usually have my lumber on my doorstep in @ 4 days.

So FYI for those wondering and,

I'd love to hear what other mail order lumber places are good.

I have ordered from Wall several times over the last 4 or 5 years, mostly the 3/8" or 1/2" stuff for boxes but I have also ordered their "shorts" bundles (cherry and walnut). I've always been pleased with both their service and quality. I do wish you could order online though.

They're actually in our area. I've never actually ordered anything to be shipped, but I'm pretty happy with them, too. Here's the website: http://www.walllumber.com/

I've ordered from www.woodnshop.com and never had an issue. I can't comment on customer service since I order through the web and it ships for a reasonable cost. I've never needed any other customer service.

I can get hardwood lumber locally pretty easily, but hardwood plywood and veneers are another story. My nearest local source for that is 8 gallons of gas away and they're expensive.

I'm not far from you (Cedar Park) maybe a few of us locals can order together to split the costs.

The trouble with mail order lumber places is that shipping is usually high... I figure on spending half again what the wood costs, for shipping.

Do you find mail order prices are generally much lower than lumberyard prices to make up the difference (and not being able to personally select the wood?)

For me it is a combination of factors. $30+ in gas to go into Minneapolis, higher prices when I get there and three hours round trip minimum means I'm willing to pay for shipping. I travel full time and what little shop time I get is pretty precious.

I think I've only ever received one piece that I wouldn't have selected myself, but I'm not as picky as some.
