    Questionable project

    here's the construction glue-up pictures.

    I had this great idea...

IT had to be pretty square so I used my homemade glue-up squares.
I like Irwin Quick-grips(TM) if you haven't noticed. I have lots more because every time they go on sale 4 for $19.99 I buy another four...

See post 11 in this thread for DIY construction/assembly squares:

If your only tool is a hammer, you tend to treat all problems as if they were nails.

Loring - its well hidden by the clamps, so do we have to guess what it is? My first guess is one half of a very large picture frame...

BTW - where do you find the Irwin clamps on sale 4 for $19? I have a bunch of the HF quickgrips, but given HF quality - they're good for light duty, but if I crank to get pressure the little plastic axle/pivot inside will break off, making the clamp useless (but at $2 each...) I might be willing to pay an extra $3 each if the Irwins don't have this issue.

      Qucik Grip clamp sales

For years they have often gone on sale... you have to watch out for a 2-pack for $19.95 with a bonus free pair. They look very like the 2-pack so its not obvious but with the words bonus on the front and the two extra clamps attached to the back where they're hard to see. I've seen them at Lowes and at Rockler.

BTW, these are the 6" mini quick grip clamps.

So here's the mystery project fail.

I thought I needed a vertical drilling clamping jig and I thought I remembered seeing something like this to hang off the side of the drill press table. As envisioned you would clamp a long board or dowel (lmiited by the height of your DP table from the floor) and drill perpendicularly into the end.

I built the thing by mitering an angle piece I had left over from some other project in the clamp-up I showed in the opening post.

Unfortunately I somehow forgot that the distance from the post is limited by the swing size of the DP, and in this case I can't reach to drill off the end of the DP table, without doing some massive rearranging of the way the table is mounted.
        So, no vertical drilling jig...

Still, it seemed like a good idea at the time.

Unless my eyes deceive me those look to be the same size as what HF sells as there 12in clamps. Would you say they are comparably sized?

Either that, or those are the nicest shop cabinets I've ever seen. But I've yet to determine a need for a cooktop in the shop. However, I have a mini refrigerator and a microwave, so maybe I'm not thinking enough outside the box ...

it was 35 degrees in the shop that night, I think your wood glues are recommended for 50 deg F and above.

I think pictures like this made me do it.
The vertical fence allows angle drilling but must be aligned each time. I think this jig must have the same problem as mine - it doesn't look like the head has enough "swing" to reach the vertical end unless the drill press table can slide to the side.
The way I fixed my table its a pain to remove and replace and doesn't slide to the side. The native drill press table platform is round and can rotate, and has slots in the form of an "X" to fasten the custom table on top.

this is the kind of round DP table I have under my WW table.

I guess that vertical drilling jig would work if I was willing to take off my WW drill table.

totally off topic, i was searching for drilling jigs and I found this adjustable V- jig for complex items. Pretty cool. And the tall T-slot clamps as well.

I believe this is a standard setup for drill press. I want to remind that there are all kind of vises available for drill presses - like this:
                          http://www.amazon.com/Professional-G...ywords=vise+xy.
They all mount to the original metal table.

Well the obvious answer here is you need a 2nd drill press for vertical work or a horizontal boring machine..
An old shop smith would be great for that.

Never pass up a good excuse to get a new tool.
