    Another (yawn) Box

    I'm running out of ideas.

This one was made for my sister's 70th Birthday, her first name is Iris, so I named the box I-70. I know that a highway somewhere.
Anyway, the box is made out of Black & White Ebony (which I'll probably never work with again). Ten minutes after cutting it to size, all the pieces cupped, one heck of an expensive lesson. At least I had more, so I did it again and immediately glued up the carcass. This time, no warp. Now I know why if comes completely covered in wax..
The legs and the drawer front are African Blackwood and the top is Bloodwood.
The pull on the drawer front is Tagua nut. Really nifty stuff, cuts with a handsaw and it polishes up (buffed) smooth. Looks and feels like Ivory. The nuts are about the size of a golf ball nd cost about $1.00 each.

For what its worth, here are the photos.

Oh, Wow! Were I so talented! I especially like the contrasting colors. You played those very well.

Where do you get your exotic wood? Where did you get the Tagua nut - that stuff really appears very white? Where do you get your ideas?

I've heard that ebony really dulls tools. Is that true? I may be making some ebony buttons for accents soon.

            I second that! beautiful Work!
Nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't how hard you hit; it's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward. How much you can take, and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done. Now, if you know what you're worth, then go out and get what you're worth. But you gotta be willing to take the hit, and not pointing fingers saying you ain't where you are because of him, or her, or anybody. Cowards do that and that ain't you. You're better than that! -Rocky Balboa-

That's a sharp looking box. Are those tanga nut pins or plugs on the legs?

Don't ever think we get tired of looking at your work. There's many time where I'll go back to look at your photos again and again.

                Richard,
I get my wood (mostly) from Cook Wood, com along with the tagua nuts. I like Cook as you can se the exact board(s) you're buying. They're a little pricey, but some stuff you can only get from them.

                Erik,
The legs have 3/16" stainless rods for added strength for what is just a glued on leg. Nothing fancy.

And thanks for all the kind words from the rest of you.

Wow! Nothing "yawn" about it! And thanks for the Ebony handling tip, wouldn't have occurred to me.

Yeah, 'Yawn, another box'. Really Bruce? Really?? Your work is always so greatly superior and your imagination has to be working on a higher plane than the rest of us!
We all love your work. Don't tell yourself that there are any yawners to it. That's just in your eyes. Go back and tweak some of your previous creations and change a couple of elements - even the wood. You have a real gift. Really!

                        Nope,
Lately I've been buying on-line (gasp) from cookwoods.com

They have some great stuff, and most of the boards are pictured individually so you know just what you're getting.
A bit on the pricey side, but where else are you going to find some of this stock.
Although I heard that ML Condon is getting back into carrying some good imported stock.

Hope this helps and one day we got to get together.

We have another ML Condon up this way too but they say the one in Westchester is the main facility so I thought they might carry wood like that.

Funny thing, I know another Bruce Cohen who lives up this way. Would be nice to know another one though
