King size pedestal frame and headboard

    My latest completed project:

A King size pedestal frame and headboard. Designed and built by me using oak veneer plywood and red oak trim. I was originally going to trim it in walnut but the price and quality of walnut available to me scared me off.

How deep are the drawers? From the angle it looks as though the headboard, may have storage on the side.

      Pretty cool!

      Did you incorporate storage underneath?

Very nice Rand! That is certainly a large project. Did it take you long to finish it?

I like it. I might just use your project as inspiration to maybe get LOML on board of a captains / pedestal frame for our bed.

I built it in phases. The pedestal frame was first. It's actually 4 pieces. There is a bank of drawers on each side with a piece of plywood spanning the center. The center end panel is held on by magnets and pops out for storage of long items. The drawers are 20"wide by 21" deep.

The headboard is 3 pieces. The big visible part sits on top of two small shelf units on each side.

It's finished with Minwax Golden Pecan stain and Rustoleum Ultimate Polyurethane which I really like.

In total the project took about 14 months but I wasn't working on it the whole time. I have no idea how many hours I put into it.

To be honest there are some flaws in it. Some of them visible but it cost less and is much stronger than most anything I could buy from a furniture store.

That's quite a project, and you did very well. It's great to have that kind of storage. What did you use for drawer pulls and slides?

My post apparently got deleted by accident. I re-attached the images and now it seems to work.

CMan - I used metal sidemount drawer slides - the cheap ones not the ball bearing type. For drawer pulls I used a round over bit and routed out space to get your fingers underneath the drawer fronts.

                      Very good work..

I have been contemplating to make headboard for a full size bed and this will inspire me to do just that.

Thanks for the post. Looks very good.
