    Weekend projects: shop furniture/fixture

Sometimes I just look around the shop and see what I could use and not have to buy additional wood to build it. I decided on a new shop stool as the one I have been using (WalMart) shifts and creaks. I have also been wanting a place to put bits and pieces while working at the drill press.

The last picture shows the stool from WalMart. [edit: Sorry for the quality, taken with my phone camera.]

    That'll work, nice job.

I've been using an old metal drafting stool. It's got a padded seat and a back, but it's always getting in the way in my tiny shop. I'm considering building something foldable, but I really like the cushions and the height adjustments.

are those stools leaning or is it an optical delusion?

            Very nice!

I'd like to build one at some point. I can see pocket screws in the rails, and through dowels reinforcing the seat to leg connection. It's a little hard to tell, but I assume there's an outward splay to the legs. If so, what angle did you choose to splay the legs?

I was embarassed to use that picture and sure enough I was called on it. Just the fisheye effect of the phone camera lense.

Make a 3" wood circle approx 1/2 - 5/8" thick, cut it into, attach one half to the tray and the other half on the opposite side of the drill press post with a radiator hose clamp.

Chris, you are right just pocket hole joints, dowel pegged top and 5 degree angle in two planes. It turned out to be amazingly level and feels very sturdy.

5 degrees, got it. Once again, very nice job.
