As I am new to woodworking - I really do many things in my shop - nothing fancy - as I am just learning. Scrolling, wood burning, quilt racks, buffet, native American Flutes, bird houses, baby crib and high chair and other stuff. These are the things that I built last winter. Have not started this winters projects as its been too nice outside. I limit my time in my shop to bad weather - someday I hope to gain abilities like you folks have.

WOW, Some nice work here.
Larry, just a note on the posting here. If it seems alike a little delay in some things here, we were having some very difficult time with spam just recently and had to set up a moderated posting system for the first few posts of anyone new.
I am not sure how many it is but I think after 5 "approved" posts, it becomes automatic. I will be checking with the head moderator on this. I just wanted to let you know in case you saw some slow response at first.Hank Lee

Nice work Larry. You appear to have something of the "artist" about you - what is the inspiration for your work? Are you working primarily from plans that catch your fancy, dream it up from scratch, or something more akin to (my method) -- "I see it, I like it, I figure out how to make it and then do it"?Bill in Buena ParkComment

Larry, wasn't your shop in "america's best workshops" wood magazine issue? I dunno how new to woodworking you are, that's a well stocked shop. Those are some nice projects as well. When do you become no longer "new"? I think when your shop is featured in a national magazine, you are no longer "new" to wood working.
Still, very nice projects.Keith Z. Leonard

again - thanks for the complements. Having your shop in a magazine - really does not make you a talented person - believe me - and I am still trying to figure out all these tools.
- I make most of the items from photos or idea that I see. I was trained as a draftsman so I kind of have an idea of how things need to go. I do not think that one year makes you an expert at anything - well - I can make good saw dust. My biggest problem is lumber - we have nothing in the lines of fancy wood - birch, popular, select pine is all about all you can purchase - walnut, maple and the such are on special order only and very costly. A block of 6" x 6" x 2' maple will run around $45 dollars and that is from WoodCraft. I think you folks out east have lots of other wood to choose from. Your very lucky. Anyhow I have so much to learn - and will love getting ideas from you folks.

Not trying to give you a hard time Larry, just making sure I was right about your shop. I think you're doing great. As for lumber, getting from Woodcraft will probably run you quite a lot, regardless, there are better/cheaper suppliers. If you bring that up in say the "project related discussion" forum, I bet you'll get a bunch of insight. I'm not from your area, so I can't comment too much, but lumber mills that are less retail are usually good, and there are some online places as well.
Again, great looking projects!Keith Z. Leonard

Larry, you may have tried this - but have you checked with any suppliers of rough-cut lumber? I didn't know I had a place very close to me that stocks a nice variety of exotic woods, rough-cut, for reasonable prices.
Not sure of your location in Idaho - but found this on the web:

They might know of folks in your area that carry furniture-grade exotics.Bill in Buena ParkComment
