I delivered LOMLs conference table today

This has consumed my for the last 3 months whenever I had time. Made from padauk it caused me to have to buy a lot of new tools including a Trident powered respirator as I quickly discovered that padauk and I are not friends. I sealed the grain on the top with about 12 coats of shellac, shellac, sand, shellac, sand, lather...rinse...repeat, on and on. Then 4 coats of varnish each sanded back to level and then the next coat. Overall I'm pleased with it and the wife loves it. The legs are also octagons, it wasn't supposed to be that type of base but the wife kept introducing mission creep with "can you do this?"
I was afraid it might be a little tippy but was proved wrong when I did the final assembly.

My thanks to everyone who answered the questions I asked and helped make it a success.

OUTSTANDING piece of work. Much better that some of the store bought ones I have seen in officers.
Measure twice, cut once, screw it up, start over

Very nice! Can you get a photo of the legs? I can't quite make them out in the photo, and it sounds very nice.

      Well done.

So you HAD to buy a lot of new tools? That makes it worth the effort!

BTW, that is GORGEOUS! Nice job, too!!!!

Thank you for the kind words.

Here is a shot that shows the legs better. I'd do it different if I ever do it again but it came out ok. I thought about adding some bevels around the leg bases but had reached the point I just wanted my shop space back and LOML said she liked it just as it was. I didn't put as much effort into the legs and platform to fill the grain because it will just be getting kicked, etc.

You know how it goes, you need a mortiser to do it just right and your router is now mounted in the table and the other one is dedicated to dovetails. To make something that requires so much edge joining and facing of course a jointer is mandatory. Of course I won't get away with that again.

I don't think I have ever said this in a woodworking forum...

              NICE finish!

You put the kind of attention to detail it takes for a show quality auto finish.

Most of my projects thus far have been slap it together stuff just building skills and getting the shop together. I am sooo hoping I can get the point of making projects like that quickly!

Simple, functional, and elegant addition to her office. Nothing I can say would do the finish justice!

I appreciate a fine finish like that. A Finish like changes the "family heirloom" to a "priceless heirloom!"

All too often, the finish doesn't match the quality of the building and construction. Your work certainly does!

Beautiful table and the finish is, SPECTACULAR!!: I must say that Paduak is one of my favorite woods to work but man, that saw dust is a killer and my whole shop and half the house is covered with this red stuff for weeks afterwords.

That's a truely amazing finish. It just goes to show what workmanship turns into when you put your pride into your work.
