12 coats of shellac, hmmm? Now I am hoping to do that many number to try and get close . What varnish did you use?

Is that a castor peeking out at the bottom? How many?

I'm usually not a big fan of glossy finishes, I'm more of an oil finish guy. But after seeing your table, I'm now a convert.

You know how it goes, you need a mortiser to do it just right and your router is now mounted in the table and the other one is dedicated to dovetails. To make something that requires so much edge joining and facing of course a jointer is mandatory. Of course I won't get away with that again.

Looks GREAT!!! I like how the legs turned out, I wouldn't change a thing about them. 12 coats wow, sounds like you spent more time on the finishing then actually making it.

Lovely piece of work! 12 + 4 coats eh? So that's what it takes to get a finish like that. Unfortunately I will never accomplish such a finish.....From where do you summon the patience to apply that many coats? I'm always in a hurry to get through the finishing stage.

This is a lesson for me in applying a finish.

That's a really nice piece of work. Certainly as nice as any piece of furniture I've ever seen.

In fact, I like it so much I have to ask whether you'd mind if I copied the design. I'll probably need a small table like that for my office and I have plenty lumber sitting around (not paduak) that would work for something like this.

I just caught back up to this. I had no idea I had gotten so many responses and so positive. Thank you all.

To answer a few questions

1) Yes, there are casters. It weighs about 50 pounds and was going on carpet so it seemed a good idea. There are 5 casters, 4 around the perimeter and 1 in the center to prevent bowing.

2) Feel free to use the design. I used a site called the octagon calculator to work out the dimensions on the top and base. The top is 48" and the base is 24. The legs are 2.5".

When I made the legs I made them long and cut off about 4" on each. since I am loathe to throw out good expensive wood I studied them for a while and had an idea. I bored them out and am finishing them now and my wife will pass them out to a few of the folks at her office as pencil holders.
