It's so baked on that even carbon steel brushes aren't taking the bottom layers off. I'll attack the problem with Dremel stainless brushes next; hopefully RPM's will succeed where my worn out arms failed to get this epoxy-like film off.

I asked the plastics faculty - solvents for poly are acetone, Methylene Chloride (old school paint remover), and gasoline. They suggested trying them in that order - and do it outside, wear protection equipment, and be careful, since all are very flammable.

Good info, woodturner, but one small quibble. Methylene chloride (dichloromethane), while an excellent solvent and quite volatile, is not particularly flammable. It can be a health risk, though, so should be used only with good ventilation.

those are listed in order of nastyness.
I'd try them in that order. Stop when you find one that works good enough.
I wouldn't mix them together! (altho that might work the best?)
