    BT3000 Motor

I found a BT3000 for 50 bucks, but it needs a new motor. Anyone know where I can find one of these or if something can be substitued for it?

Best advice I could offer is to watch the "Member Classifieds" on this forum. Occasionally someone parts out their saw and a motor might be available. Other source could be Ebay.

I found one on ebay, but the price for a new one I would be nearly better off buying a new saw.

Now that I have read the FAQ and talked to the seller I have a little different opinion.

He said the motor runs, but he thinks you either need to clean the brushes, change the brushes, or get a new motor. The other thing is it has "light" surface rust, but says I could clean it off with a little oil and 000 steel wool.

I read the faq and buying this saw for 50 seems reasonable. Worst case is I just part it out or use it soley as a router table. Best case I clean the brushes and it runs fine, or buy a used motor for 70 bucks and I got a working saw for under 150.

Am I off base on this or is likely to be more complicated?

A BT3000 has an anodized aluminum top. How can it have light surface rust??? ( I suppose the cabinet which is sheet steel may have rust.) Wearing out brushes would indicate a LOT of use. Running slowly usually indicates shorted windings = bad motor.
I think in many cases if you are patient you can get a nice, fully working BT3000 for $100-150. I think its worth more than that to me, but I think that's what the market will bear. I think my FAQ recommends against buying a fixer upper for much money. You may want to inspect it and see what its missing and how the motor runs... I think the motors the hardest part to find because burning up a motor is the most frequent cause of parting out a saw.

              Bubba,

If this is the BT3000 that was listed on CL a few days ago, don't bother. I drove over and looked at it yesterday, thinking to either nab it for the guy in Austin that has been looking for one or to parts it out after I took a few things. I've got a 3100 in pristine condition, but wouldn't let a good deal on a 3000 go by without investigating.

It was a completely wasted trip, the saw is currently stored in the open on the guy's rear patio and looks like it has been there quite a while. I suspect it has been rained on multiple times, which probably means more problems with the motor than just brushes. Rusted frame, heavy oxidation of the table and other parts, dirt everywhere, far beyond worth trying to salvage in my opinion. He honestly looked at me and said "It just needs a little cleaning up" before I wished him good luck and got out of there.

I (literally) can now see why he doesn't have any photos with the listing. I don't normally post a 'bad mouth' on CL of anyone's listings, buyer beware and all that. But I've got to say something here on the BT3 forum before you go to the trouble of going over to see it. YMMV....

              Mike

I appreciate the heads up. After talking with him he made it sound like it was in pretty good shape, just needed a little love. I was thinking worse case I would part it out and break even.

I am going to listen to Lchien and either wait for one on CL that is in good shape or just buy a new 3100 clone.

                Thanks guys.

                  Bubba,

Now that my deal on my BT3100 is finalized, I will keep my eyes open for you. I would suggest you keep about $200 - $250.00 available for a good saw, and count your blessings if you get one for less...

I haven't seen many on Craigslist here lately, but this past summer there were no less than 3 NIB (New In Box) BT3100s for under $200.00 in the Houston craigslist...
