    DW733 Planer (reconditioned) for $289

ToolKing.com has the (now discontinued, I guess?) DW733 as a reconditioned item for only(?) $289, with no shipping. http://www.toolking.com/dewalt/view.asp?ID=701

While I've been all set to buy the Ryobi from the Borg for $269, this gives me pause -- but I'm wondering if that's just because of DW's rep as one of the "big boy" tool builders.

Does anyone have an opinion on the 733? All I know is that the 733 has the old-style resharpenable blades, instead of the throwaways that I've been reading some complaints about.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

    TIA,

    augie

It's well made - nice fit and finish compared to Delta. It planes well according to the reviews I've read.
It's really heavy. Pushing high 60+ or maybe 70 pounds IIRC. Something to consider if you want to use it as a portable planer or not have a dedicated stand.

If the weight doesn't bother you, It sounds like a <s>good</s> OK deal.

P.S. Sweensdv is right, actually the price is not a real great deal.
considering they've been closing out at $300 NIB. Still its a good planer for the money...

Given the choice of the Ryobi or the DeWalt, I'd pick the DeWalt everytime. However, I'm not so sure that the $289 price for a reconditioned DeWalt 733 is that much of a bargin. Thats about the same price that many places were clearing out their NIB 733's when DeWalt discontinued it.

I've been using the 733 for almost 2 years and love it. Does a supurb job. I paid $300 with extra set of knives, dust collector and free shipping thru Amazon when I got it. $289 with free shipping isn't too bad, considering the newer ones are running a lot more.

I have the 733 and it does a great job. That I paid 200 for mine used and I feel I got a heck of a bargin. The $289 seems a little steep for a re-furb discontinued model. You should be able to get a new one for about that price.

I have been eyeing the same planer at my local Costco lately. They have it for $299. If you have a Costco nearby you might check that out.

              Augie,

I have a Dewalt 733 I snagged new from Lowes when it was briefly put on sale for $239. It performed flawlessly right out of the box. Literally a glass smooth cut with no apparent snipe. The others are correct in saying it is heavy, but I manage to get it in and out of my Ultimate Tool Stand without too much trouble.

The $289 price seems a bit high for a reconditioned model they are closing out.

I was lucky enough to snag the 733 from amazon for $289 and free shipping. I really like it. Don't know if I would go for the reconditioned one at that price, you can buy the DW734 from amazon for $352 right now, and if you can wait they'll probably go on sale as well.

Well, that was then, this is now.

The only way to tell if it's a bargain at $289 today is by comparing it to the alternatives available today. I'm not trying to be critical of anyone, just trying to help figure out how to tell if something is a bargain.

If there aren't any new (or n.o.s.) 733s for sale at ~ $300 these days (I've looked, but haven't found any yet!) then a reconditioned one might be a bargain at $289. Relevant facts would include the reliability of reconditioned tools in general, DeWalt planers in particular, and the price/performance of other planers.

                  Regards,

                  John

I recently spent about a month watching DW733s on ebay. I was going to buy a NIB if I could get it for $250 (including shipping). Invariably, the final cost came out to around $300-$350 with shipping so I gave up. There were a few used ones that went for around $250 total. Based on that, I would say that $289 is an average deal for reconditioned.

I looked over at Amazon's site and they do indeed have the DW734 for only $348. That in itself seems like a very good price but then I noticed something else. Spend over $250 on tools and Amazon will send you a $50 gift certificate to buy more tools!

I don't know if this is the right forum for it but since the discussion was on DW733, I thought that I would post here. I have a DW733 planer which I bought new a few months back and have never used. I removed it from the box to see if it will fit the UTS that I built but other than that I haven't even plugged it in once. I am willing to sell it for $265.00+shipping. I have the original box still with me, so you can have the box too

My reason for selling is that I was able to score a Ridgid planer in the recent HD clearance sale and would like to sell the DeWalt. Even though I am selling it for less than what I paid for it, I would still be ahead on my planer purchase on the whole.

Send me a PM if you are interested.

If you're considering the DeWalt and the Ryobi, bear in mind that the Ryobi is equally heavy. I consider that a fairly good thing, seeing that I don't want it skating across the shop during use. I've only used the AP1300 a few times, but I got glass-smooth cuts and no measurable snipe. Can't speak to its reliability, but it's performed like a champ so far.
