    Free Irwin 7.25" carbide blade

I was at Lowes today, saw a display where they had some 24T 7.25" Marathon Weld-Tec carbide tip blades. The box says Trade in Trade up. and a somewhat sparse instructions: Step one put your used blade in the box on top. Step 2 take a marathon blade and take it to the register for instant redemption.

I presume its on the honor system.

slick deals also has it listed.

Honor system at a Lowes???? You're probably given a receipt of some sort for your old blade.

well, I hope you have better luck than I did.

So I put my old blade in the slot. You can see it in the pics.
Took the new blade to the cash register. Told her I should get the blade free because I turned in an old blade, she said, "you wish". I said, no really there's a promotion.
      Rang up at $12.
She called a employees to go check. THen we had to call a supervisor, I took her and showed her personally.
She said when you check out you'll get a rebate for to send to Irwin. I said that doesn't sound like instant redemption.
Checked out - no rebate coupon. The she said I'd have to go to Irwin's website. If they call and ask we'll tell then you turned in a blade. Already did, I said, no mention of the promo on the Irwin website.
She made some more calls. Oh, she said, what it is, we'll recycle your old blade for free.

Somehow "Trade in for a free blade", "Take your FREE IRWIN MARATHON with WeldTec blade to the Register for INSTANT REDEMPTION" (their caps) doesn't seem to equal free recycling to me.

To say I'm miffed is an understatement.
Returned the **** blade. Today my opinion of Lowes is pretty low.

That would be some coincidence if one of our members purchased a "reconditioned" blade from Lowes that was your "turn in".

What did the manager says? Someone there must know something about it. The register ppl usually don't even know what a hammer is.

That sucks! On the plus side, the Irwin Marathon series isn't much to write home about, but I feel your pain....you should have been given a new blade. Shame on them.

That's what I was thinking. All that over a $12 blade.

basically i took the text of what i posted here and put it on the lowe's customer care contact page so I'll see what they say. The store manager actually called me in response to my suggestions last time I used that page. Their performance seems to be way short of what the display promises in this case. I'm not going to cry over what Knottscott describes as a so-so $12 blade.

There always seems to be a tradeoff of some sort when there are "giveaways", or special pricing or conditions. It could be in the wording and how that is construed, or maybe the extra fine print, that nobody can read in 3 seconds (like TV car ads).

                  .

You can read this display in about 10 seconds. The photos I posted have all the text and in three places it says "FREE BLADE" There's no fine print on the stand, the problem is they just don't know how to do what they promise.

It's the meaning and eventuality of 'free' that gets the unwary. They likely knew exactly how to get someone to buy the blade.

Here's the story according to the Lowes manager.

THey put out the display too early. That's why it didn't show up in the computer.
Won't start until April 1 they said. Meanwhile they pulled the display off the floor and its back behind their counter.

The store should honor it as the display was presented.

I have been bitten by their honor system as well. I had a quart can of custom mixed paint that had a definite slow leak as told my the thin paint line down the side of the can - couldn't even see the defect. I took the can back to the paint desk and they said not to sweat it. They repackaged the paint in a new can, replace the original lid so that I'd have the info and marked n/c on the top in large letters. As I was checking out I presented the can and told them the story. THe clerk called an assistant manager who heard the story and took the can back to the paint desk, returned and said that no one there knew anything about it. He asked for the name of the employee and I described him so back to the desk he went. Returned again saying that his shift was up and he was gone. Rubbing his chin a while I said that they could keep it and not to expect me to buy paint there again because I wan't paying twice for the paint. He actually had to think a bit more and then said that it was OK. Gee whiz, OK?
