    engineer's squares

I'm not sure if this is in the right place here, please feel free to move it.
    I'm looking for engineers squares.
Rockler has a 3 pc set for $29, Woodcraft has a 3 pc set for $39.
Anybody own either one or have any insight into which would be better?
Or is there a better choice altogether?

Just to add to the mix, Griz has a 4 piece set for $16.95

Grizzly, Rockler, Woodcraft , I'd guess they're all the same quality and accuracy.

I got the 3 Piece set from Woodcraft a year or two ago. They're made by Groz. They do go on special a couple times a year too.

I use them quite a bit. As far as I can tell they are pretty darn square.

I got the Groz squares, too. I use them often and they seem pretty darn accurate to me, too.

          Herb,
The Griz option is the best bang for the buck, obviously.
I have had the Groz set for about 3 years and use them a lot. They are very square. Of those 2 sets, order from Rockler....30% less and free shipping, I think.

The squares from the mentioned sites look very much alike.

Just out of curiosity, what are you guys using these for specifically? Just getting a solid 90 deg on stuff like saw blade tilt?

Table saw blade, band saw blade, tilting tables on sanders, jointer fence, scooping ice cream, checking boards for square, checking other squares for square -- things like that.

Edit: Oh, and checking sharpened chisels for square -- to see if I'm sharpening them evenly.

I use them for checking square, a solid 90°, like you say, on tools and smaller assemblies.

                      I have and use a large square (18" x 24") and a combination square (12" x ~4")
but the smaller squares are useful for checking table saw and miter saw blades, drill press table to bit (side to side and front to back), band saw blade to table in both axes, and small assemblies. In many cases, the combination square is too large to fit and also the "fixed" squares I consider more reliable - less likely to be off than the combination square which is always moved and may have some wear and don't have to be adjusted prior to use (e.g. moving the head to the end).

Well heck, I guess I will have to get a set. Though it will probably be the Grizz ones, since I'm close to return them easily if they aren't square.

Thanks for all the input. I decided on the Groz from Rockler. Good reviews and free shipping, $32 total, not too bad.

I'm not convinced you need a whole set.
I have just a 4" one, that's usually good enough to measure most of the things I listed. Then your cost will be less than $10. But, YMMV, get what you think you'll need.

I have been thinking about grabbing the Groz square set from Woodcraft. I have a $10.00 off coupon from them for in store purchases, and have an errand to run in that area anyway... (Army surplus store literally across the street, looking for one of those bomber caps with the wool ear flaps for a Christmas gift for one of my brothers in law...)
