I also find it funny that the title of your post requires people to click on it to see what your "suggestions/requests" were. Why not put them in the title?

I read all bargain alerts and all follow up posts. As I amass a new workshop, I want to get as good a deal on tools as I can, however, I also don't want junk. My experience so far is that by reading follow up replies, I have been able to determine which good tools are really a bargain and which "cheap" tools to avoid. So in my case, as I learn what tools I really want, reading further into the posts has not only been a must, but has yielded a very high end shop for substantially less money. Oh and thanks to all who aided me in my pursuits.Comment

my two or three cents worth:
Amen to better titles, in general, not just bargain alerts
for example this thread is "a few suggestions/Requests", not real informative. The strength of this forum is partly in its arcives of old posts, make it easy to search! Topic and specfics, not "got a new tool" or what I did today" or "newbie with a question". More like Got a bosch 1617 router, or I rebuilt my STanely plane today, or Newbie Problem with SMT.
As for posting craigs list items, there are some guys here, heaven bless then that cruise the lists on eBay and CL all the time. I thinks its a service to point out things of note that might be bargains. Someone may luck out, a hit rate of 1 in 50 would be great if we matched up some guy with a dream tool close to his home. (esp. if he didn't know he needed it!)
Good titles with an internal link would be great. Price in the title, well if its an auction might not make sense. But type of tool, make, and location would be a start, that would give me enough info to decide whether to open the post or not. Remember that the firts few lines show up when you hover the mouse near the title, that helps too.
I think, even if I have no direct interest in buying the item, i very often look just to see what it looks like, and what they're going for. Good points of reference for later when I may be looking for one near me or just pricing strategies for used tools.Last edited by LCHIEN; 08-09-2007, 11:31 AM.

+1 on what Loring said.
re: Craigslist, it may be worth pointing out that in a large urban area there may be Craiglist ads worthy of note for someone just out of his normal range. I happen to live on the county line just outside of Los Angeles. Listings in my county might not be seen by someone who looks in LA listings, but might be interesting. Oh, and LA has something like five or six areas within that county.
I don't mind that there is the occasional Craigslist reference in Bargain Alerts, but it should be made clear in the title where the tool is located.

I've found with CL that sometimes I miss a bargain because it's listed in another category besides Tools. If I see something that is a great tool deal but in a different section of CL I.E. garage sales or business, I may point my fellow BT3ers to that deal. I'll attempt to be as short and descriptive as possible in not only the title, but the 1st sentence as well in any future posts (not just the bargain alert posts).

I'm in favor of the occasional Craigslist posting. I believe someone just recently scored a great deal on a Powermatic bandsaw from just such a posting. CL is a pain to wade through unless you are looking for a particular item. Its great to have them brought to the surface here when there is a GREAT deal out there. But, only the great ones should be posted. I also value hearing the comments on CL postings so I get an idea of what's worth what. I even admit to having posted questions here to find out if a particular CL listing in my area is a good bargain or not.
I'll tell ya what I'm tired of seeing: Lowe's postings; my Lowe's almost never has anything on clearance, so it just makes me jealous! But then again, I did score the FT2000 for $75 or so a while back.
Never met a bargain I didn't like.Comment

I have never had any problem with anyone's post in Bargain Alerts. They have always been helpful even if I didn't buy the item. I guess I just appreciate anyone's effort to alert us to any bargain. If it's not for me, I just keep going.

Why don't we just create a sticky with guidelines on posting in this forum, such as above, or something similar?
I don't mind listings from other parts of the country, but it would be nice if it was in the title. However, if someone forgets or is new, then no big deal. We are lucky to have this forum in the first place and we should keep in mind that anyone posting a bargain is only trying to help others - as things go, these are minor issues.Comment

My local Lowe's (only have one convenient due to a lot of road construction), is in a HIGH RENT area, next closest (see above), the same. Their bargains are closer to mosts regular prices. There are a number of stores (including some national chains) that haven't made it in that area. She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.Comment

I think at the end of the day, it can be safely said that one man's trash is another man's treasure. We are not on here spamming or flaming each other, just trying to be helpful. I hope that those who find these posts tedious can appreciate that every post cannot be everything to everybody, and if some find them useful, it's just good karma for others to be tolerant. Threads of this type must be more useful than a one-time-deal tool gloat (I'm guilty of this myself), because nobody can further benefit, it's just talk. So let's all agree to post a good, informative tagline, and try not to lose patience with these kinds of posts if that level of courtesy is adhered to. Does that sound like a plan to everybody?

Sounds like a plan, Cracker. As I said in my first reply, I was mostly just playing devil's advocate after Grant did likewise. And as I said in my second, Craiglist reposts seem like a needless duplication to me. But I can see how they might be useful at times to others.
One more thought on the thread titling thing: not only will it help with searches, but it will help us all remember whether a certain thread carries any interest to us as individuals. Many is the time I've reopened a long thread with a nondescript title, only to think, "Oh, that's right, I looked at this yesterday, I don't care about any of this ..."LarryComment
