You are not quite correct. You have to "hold" the base up to whatever you are trying to attach it to until the sound of the motor changes. Then you can let go and the motor keeps the base attached to the wall (or ceiling as I used). For this to work, the motor needs to continue to run. If you read the directions, they clearly state that you turn the motor in the base off to automatically release it from whatever you have it attached to.
