    Fantasy Football

I keep seeing adds on the tv promoting their fantasy football gambling sites. How are they doing this? Isn't it illegal. I figured I'd bring it up here for the all knowing ones. I'm 10000% against it, think it is illegal and would like to see it gone!

I guess I am indifferent to gambling, but I would rather jab forks into my eyes and ears than watch another weekly fantasy football contest commercial--and I don't watch that much sports. Just one college game per week, usually.

There are a group of people who do not have a life during Football season. What started out as a friendly thing has grown into big business with a lot of money involved. It is a time waster at work and takes away from other things like family. It can and does become on obsession to some. I don't think it i gambling in the true sense as you pay an entry fee and that is where the winning a profit come from for the owner of the league. It is far to complicated for me I would rather bet on the games and then watch and enjoy them

I agree, more time is wasted at work on this type trivia and Facebook than can ever be imagined. What irks me that it is gambling which is illegal here and it is promoted on TV. Now if the same TV medial promotes this and at the same time wants to prosecute a county official for NOT issuing a marriage license I get really hot. If we are going to uphold laws let's be consistent with it.

Probably just me, but I just don't get "Fantasy" football (or other fantasy sport, if there is one). What is it? Do the watchers or gamblers or whatever, look at imaginary numbers, plays, etc.? Are they betting on an imaginary game? Like I said, I have no comprehension of this at all?

When I was a kid, I loved sports; baseball, football, soccer, and even basketball. When I was in junior high I played them all and even enjoyed track. But when I went out for JV football in my high school freshman year, I was found to have a heart murmur, and not only did I not get to play, but I was sidelined from participating even in Gym. NY state requires that every student must take gym however and I'd go, suit-up, and sit on the sidelines.

That's when I began to see how really un-sportsmanlike jock really are. I'd get harassed almost every day, saw absolutely the dumbest of guys get the awards, the privileges, and the exemptions that other students didn't... all for the sake of their football prowess. Colleges are obviously worse, and it's left me knowing that in far too many examples, in almost every sport, sportsmanship is quit a mis-label.

So, I don't watch, don't care, and won't have much to do with any team sport. Oddly though, I love movies about sports... perhaps because they are about the ideals of what sports could and should be, but perhaps never were.

I don't play fantasy football, but I do watch The League!

I'd think that it's not officially gambling. which would be a game of chance. It's a game of skill in that you choose a virtual team of players. The performance of your "team" is aggregated and then compared to the other team "owners". So your performance is based on your ability to draft productive players.

Jr, isn't that what a bookie does, take bets on/ against real games? All of the fantasy football that I was witness to by my fellow workers were real players and real games so I suppose that this is the same thing. The work time wasted with these games is sickening.

Capncarl, yeah they are real players, but a fantasy team is comprised of players from around the league. Points are awarded for each player's actual rushing yards, passing yards, TDs, etc. It is the cumulative points of the fantasy team that determines winners and losers. There are limitations as to how many players at each position your fantasy team may contain and salary caps.

The excitement of your co-workers is associated with the cumulative performance of their virtual teams. They are probably not betting on a real game, as one would do with a bookie. As to the waste of time at work, well as I said above, I don't play.

I understand now! It's like a ship I was on, we took a bucket full of hermit crabs and decorated and numbered each shell, then dumped the crabs out in the center of a large chalk circle drawn on the deck of the ship. Everyone betted on his favorite crab and the first crab out of the circle won. Same thing? Except I think the crew ate the crabs!

Looks like the tide may be turning, saw on the news that Nevada of all places stopped fantasy football from operating without a gambling license. Must be gambling then? If this sticks then all the states will follow their lead. Good riddance.

I personally have no issues with gambling, what I have issues with is illegal gambling. If you think it ought to be legal, then bust your hump and get the law changed.

The fantasy sports leagues I do believe are nothing more than another form of gambling. If your state has laws against it, then its illegal.

For full disclosure, I am the absolute last person on the planet you want to talk to about team sports. I don't get it, never did... I prefer quieter sports with no crowds, like Hunting, or Fishing...

Poker is a game of skill but I think poker is considered gambling. Casino rules prohibit "counting cards" which I believe is an attempt to take out skills and turn it into chance only. Fantasy sports have become a big business recently but it is not really surprising. Gambling is another form of entertainment and people spend more and more time and money on all forms of entertainment. Sports itself is a very big business and sports is also entertainment.
