This also reduces the what if's with cutting down a 2x8 and on and on.

I think the idea of the 2x6 challenges was to take a sow's ear (ugly construction lumber) and turn it into something amazing. Plus the cost of entry was minimal. I don't think there were (m)any restrictions on what you could or couldn't do with the board, so long as you didn't supplement it with more wood. So if you wanted to cut it into thin veneer strips, that was OK.

I'd be far more likely to enter a contest that didn't involve beating the clock (other than a reasonable contest end date)

I was suggesting alternate woods maybe to get away from the "another 2x4 contest" senario. I've got nothing against pine, Pine makes some nice stuff, 90% of my project material is pine. Other woods open up what you can make.

I agree about not wanting to beat a clock. It sounds like a disaster waiting to happen as folks may take shortcuts with power tools that they otherwise wouldn't. The great thing about the 2x6 challenge is you are only limited by your creativity. Construction lumber is available in a few different woods including Redwood.

I posted on the poll thread, but I figured I would repeat it here just for clarification of what I was suggesting. I wasn't trying to create a "beat the clock" type scenario. I just wanted to suggest a contest to get people making stuff and posting it here.

A lot of people complain they have no time for woodworking, so I picked 60 minutes as an arbitrary "quick" time frame to just get out and work on a quick project.
