    Anthill casting

Good use for a fireant anthill. The best part is they all die in the process.

If your only tool is a hammer, you tend to treat all problems as if they were nails.

Boiling water works well, too except you don't get a neat casting.... depends what your goal is. Very green, although it leaves a dead spot in the grass that lasts a few days before it grows back. Please handle the water with care, though.

Good to know...I haven't seen any in my yard here in Corpus yet, they are around but not in my yard. When we lived in San Antonio, it was a constant, uphill battle and I found myself dreading the times I needed to mow the lawn because I would always find 'that one' little mound I hadn't killed off yet and they would swarm my legs...ouch!

I have found that Amdro and other granular type killers work well, but the key is not to disturb the nest when applying. They will not work if you do for some reason. Boiling water works as well, but logistically difficult on larger properties.

This casting is cool, but you need the furnace and logistics and material costs can be a big factor, not to mention safety.
I have never actually seen that done before, so it was a cool project.

I never thought about it, or realized that the ant tunnels went so deep??? In our neck of the woods we fight fire ants most of the year, but try to leave a couple of colonies alive but in check for termite control. They eat termites and termites eat houses.

Makes me think of this (I remember when it was on Ebay, as I think someone here, posted about it). Sold for around $550.
