    U-Verse Connectors Question ???

I just signed up for ATT Uverse. They are coming in two and half weeks to connect everything. I have a computer and two tvs. Here's my question:

What kind of connectors are used to connect the tvs and computer?

I have an RJ 11 connection where my computer is currently placed. I have coax connectors where my tvs are currently placed. Am I going to have to install new connectors? If so, what kind - RJ45s?

    Thanks.

IMHE, AT&T installs the needed stuff, as they have to test it as well (must meet specs). In my parents house, RG6 quad shielded ran to all the tv's and they still replaced the ends. For a wired network, they will need one RJ45 (network), connector (same as the back of most computers now). RJ11, is the old phone and 10 based t connector.
The router, they provide MAY (I think it is an option), have a wireless setup, as well.

Thanks, LinuxRandal. I guess what I was really asking - do I need to provide RJ11 wall outlets where I wish my tvs and computers to be placed? I don't really relish the idea of them cutting holes or channels in the walls. Thanks.

the Uverse signal comes in on your normal telephone wiring which is usually terminated in the house to every telephone wall jack. They will want to plug their modem into one of the RJ11 jacks if you have one. You just need one, it could probably be any one of them. You will lose the use of your telephone house wiring for wired telephones. Unless you have the alternate pair usually used for a second line, wired up to every jack.

Thanks, Loring. I guess what is bothering me is that they have scheduled 4 hours for the installation. Does not exactly sound like plug and play.

The 4 hour installation window gives the installer 3 hours and 55 minutes to be late and he will still be withing their pomised arrival time. In this part of the hot sweaty world they will not commit to which half of the day they will waste your time waiting for them, just which day, and about 3:30 pm they will often have someone else call you to reschedule to a different day and mess up another of your vacation days waiting on them. Another 8 hours of your life you will not get back.

How does the price of Uverse compare to cable or satelite?

Hilarious! Just hope it's not true.

For a two year contract Uverse is asking $108.99 + State taxes (7%) + 911 Fee ($1.50) = $118.12. Add to that a one time fee of $49.99 for "activation." This comes to a little over $120.00/month. The only other internet connections I can find here thru Chattanooga Electric Power Board for approximately $150.00/mo and Comcast for approximately the same. ATT & EPB plans combine FO TV, phone, and internet service. The more expensive one has much faster internet speeds but for $30/month I can wait. Comcast is also faster but again, I don't want to spend the extra money.

My Brother in Law and I wired both our houses with Cat5 cable prior to getting Uverse. We ran the cable all the way out to box on the out side wall. We installed cable in every room in the house except the bathrooms. The install was easy for the Att guy took him about 30 minutes The Residential Gateway and router are on my desk in my den and all cable terminate in two wall plates on the wall behind my desk. My desk is in a former closet so if I return it to a closet and small shelf in corner will take care it. In Sacramento the main phone carrier is ATT so we have VOIP, Internet and UVerse TV. We have had very few problems and have Battery Backup on the RGWay. so if the power goes out we still have phone service and Internet service on out Ipads. We have had for 5+ years and are very satisfied. We pay $200 a month for every thing which includes 4 TV receivers and a upgrade Internet service. We have Cat5 connection on two wall in the Master Bedroom, Family room and Living room. ATT installed Fiber optic cabling to the Various boxes in the neighborhood and regular lines to the houses which make for good reception The closes box to our house in 2 blocks away. We got tired of dealing with Dish Network and Direct TV with reception issues and Comcast got way to expensive. By spending a couple of days installing Cat5 cable is save the need to run cable though the exterior wall and along baseboards. BIL house was a challenge as it is a 2 Story, mine was simple we pulled the existing Coax out and had the Cat5 attached to the end so there as less time climbing around the attic.

Should I install Cat5 cable everywhere I want a device? Or can they use my current coax (installed for tv)? Do I need one everywhere there is to be a device? From Loring's reply, I gathered there is only one outlet required and everything else connects wirelessly. Did I construe his reply incorrectly? I am so confused.

Lloring is partially correct. If you have wireless receivers you they limit you to how many you can have. I have 3 wired and 1 wireless that I can put in the guest room when my
Son and his family come from Idaho or even outside on the patio. You don't need Cat5 coax works also. The Cat5 was easier to work with and you can use a Computer with a Lan cable if you don't have wireless capabilities.

phrog, You had nothing to worry about, I'm hoping they didn't put extra holes in your walls because no matter what connectors you have, they can always just connect the devices with a convertor jacket that AT&T installation crew have with them. If you have wireless receivers that's a luxury for you and them both but even if you don't have that, external connector convertors can always do the trick. This also depends on what technician came to do the installations, some are very helpful while others just don't care and tell you that there's no way around issues where they have to do some extra work. Please do let us know how it all went.

All went well and have been a user of Uverse for over a year now. They did change some of my connections but there were no problems encountered as far as that goes. Thanks.
