    Unwelcome Visitor [Mrs. Walnut ALERT]

I took this picture in my back yard this morning. I used a telephoto, so I wasn't as close as it looks. By the time I was able to arm myself, he was gone.

Some of you may remember that my dog, Marsh, was bitten by a rattle snake in '08. It's the price you pay for living next to a wilderness area.

That picture gives me the hibbie jibbies. Stay safe.

Pretty common to find them around my place, too, along with the occassional coral. Unless they are in my way I try to give them a wide berth.

        Eek!

        Are snakes protected in CA?

I used to bike to work when I lived in San Diego. On one big descent down a road into a canyon, there was a rattler splattered right next to the bike lane. Nearly wrecked when I saw that.

Took a different canyon route home later that summer and a little rattler was crossing the path. I was flying and was able to bunny hop it at the last minute.

Like Indiana Jones, I hate snakes!

If you get him, and can cure the skin, I would LOVE to get my hands on it... That would make a great hat band...

Only some snakes are protected in CA Rattlers aren't. The ones in the White Building at 10Th and L street here Sacramento are protected for some reason also. Processed Snake skin also make good Pen Blanks. He is one my Brother in Law got last summer while fishing in the hills east of Sacramento. He is 6'1" so this snake was big.

The hat, pants, and boots go well with your BMX bike in the background.

One of the less-desireable things about living here in Painted Post, NY... it's rattle-snake country!!!

A mile and a half up the road from here they used to have a drive-in theater about 30 or so years ago, and those that grew up around here tell me that it often caused some problems going to the refreshment stand in the evening, as most every year running across a rattlesnake was a common occurance.

That was gone shortly before we moved here in 73' but just above there was a road-side rest area that used to get them. About 20 years ago, a trucker got bit, when he stopped to relieve himself... they closed the stop shortly thereafter.

I've only seen a couple, and at a distance, thankfully. I love squirrels, as they have a good eye for them... and the one I spotted in my yard a few years ago was because of the squirrels screeming and flagging their tails. Three years ago, they caught a five footer down at the old RR depot (now a museum) which is less than a 100 yards from our house.

It's bad enough when they are outside the house. Inside the house is another thing...

How high would you jump if you ran into one of these buggers?

I did not attach other photos where they opened the snake up to show the full grown whitetail deer.

Like my FIL says, there are only 5 kinds of snakes I don't like:
                              Live ones
                              Dead ones
                              Big ones
                              Little ones
and sticks that look like 'em.
