So is this what "gangam" style is supposed to be? I was clueless about that term!

Sad thing is, stuff like this (I realize they probably had fun doing it), probably brings them more positive feedback, then they get for the stuff that matters.

I agree with you, but look at it this way: The space generation has passed and younger generations haven't been captivated in the same way. This is a great way to reach out to them, showing them that their job is not so stuffy as it seems on tv!

Nah, I had heard it on the radio, but the first I had sought it out to watch as a video was because of this post. Count me as one of the other 6 billion

Bad math from a fact checker. View count, doesn't mean every view is a new view, nor does it mean the "world" has seen it (makes your view of the world seem small, doesn't seem very "civil").
First I heard the term was the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. Went to a local hockey game (I have yet to understand that), and they were doing some sort of audience thing, where it and some other term was used. (didn't get the reference) This thread was the second time I heard the term.
EDIT: and no I didn't click the link you posted, no real reason to.

it's an exaggeration for sarcasm and effect. I ran fast and loose with "Civilized" and "world". And I'm sure it's more like 100 people that haven't seen it. I did use emoticons to indicate that.

But it is the hugest thing ever on Youtube, handily beating Justin Bieber (and don't tell me you don't know who he is) overtaking his previous record in a much shorter time. Its the power of the internet... as of Nov 24th Youtube says it was being watched at a clip of between 7 and 10 million times per day with no let up. And, while some people watch it more than once, you can also have a crowd around the big screen monitor with 10 or more watching as well. So who really knows what the facts are for viewers. While the term viral is another slang/jargon term, there's little arguing that it has really gone viral in the internet sense.

Anyway one of the points I'm trying to make is that you won't understand the parody unless you've seen the original. While arguably 1 billion people have seen the original (you tube is NOT the only medium for this video), the parody can be widely understood, whereas if you haven't seen the original, then it might not seem particularly impressive.

No sarcasm smiley, does make it hard to read. (shock smiley doesn't work well for that, based on this experience)
Doesn't help that I never got into the emoticon/texting thing (still don't do that, old cell phone user, no smart, expensive (initials))
About all I know about Justin Bieber is he is some singing kid, who they have made some big deal about his hair, and a joke about him, that a Scottish comedian made (can't put here). Heard some part of a song of his, for some commercial for a movie he did (no idea how many he has done). Did what I do when I hear commercials, change the channel or turn it off.
Not sure why you think I or anyone would need to understand a parody, to simply learn what the heck a new to them, term means. (what I commented on) Never had an interest in knowing what the top YouTube video's were/are. Irrelevant to me as the Guinness book of records.
