    Happy 30th, Compact Disc

Having been a little lad, and not getting into music until high school, my first CD that I owned was four of them, given to me with my first CD player back at Christmas '93.

Off The Deep End - Weird Al (have no idea why)
    Get a Grip - Aerosmith
The Best of Kansas - Kansas (freshman year marching program)
and one other I can't recall.

The obvious winner there was the Aerosmith album, as it introduced me to guitar solos. I probably played 'Amazing' 300 times the first six months, then I found this band called Stone Temple Pilots.

The last physical CD I purchased...must be the AC/DC - Back in Black remaster. If it's not a DVD-A, I usually just download it. Next one I buy will be the Soundgarden - King Animal release in November.

What was your first, last and next CD?

Honestly, I don't remember the first CD I bought. I'm sure I haven't bought my last as I prefer to purchase a physical CD & then extract the files for my player.

My first CD purchase was like you, several disks at once.

      Husker Du's Candy Apple Grey
      Rush Moving Pictures
      Rush Caress of Steel
      Rush 2112

Yeah I am a Rush fan that happens to like Alternative as well as prog rock...

      My last CD purchase?

Okay this one shows how long I have been in Texas...

Josh Turner Live at The Ryman

      My next CD purchase?

      Rush Clockwork Angels.

Unless I can find Icehouse self titled on CD.

Oh the prior CD before Josh Turner? Rush Snakes and Arrows.

I prefer to have the physical disk that I can rip my own mp3s from.

I used to be that way as well, but with downloads having much better quality, I fail to see the point anymore. I don't care to store them all in FLAC, so 256 or 320 is fine for me these days. Music has become so **** as well that I'd rather have just a song or two instead of purchasing the whole CD. Less room needed for storage as well.

I took advantage of iTunes Match last year to upgrade all my ripped music from 128 to 256 or 320. So easy, even though it hosed my folders. Still, I spent probably an hour or two fixing it whereas it would have been several days ripping.

DBhost- I got Clockwork Angels for a few bucks online, and it's pretty good.

I honestly can't remember exactly what my first CD was, but it was probably Peter Gabriel, maybe U2. But I got into music way late- nothing really until Highschool.

But after that I collected quite a few discs.

          Today, I will download some if there's a deal on Amazon MP3 for $5 or less. I have a ton of classical stuff I got for a $1. Maybe $2 if it's a collection of 50-100 MP3s.

But I can usually get a used CD for $5-6 shipped, so I'll go that route. If it's brand new, I'll only get it on Amazon MP3 if there's a special for it (like the $5 I got Wierd Al's most recent album for the week it came out).

Otherwise, I'll either wait or get it online on CD. Recent purchases are: Mumford and Sons- Babel, Avett Brothers- The Carpenter, Muse- the 2nd Law (arriving tomorrow!), and I did order the Peter Gabriel re-release of So, which comes out in October. I will probably get the new Bat for Lashes CD, but I haven't pre-ordered it yet.

I have eclectic tastes in music...

new Sony CDP-102 and the Pointer Sisters, Break Out.
Sony player long gone but still have the album!

Also bought a lot of Telarc (specialty recording label) albums early for their very high quality all-digital recordings and pop and classical artists.

I keep buying CDs of classic rock stuff, pre-owned from eBay. Cheaper than buying the whole album from or even three or four tracks from itunes/amazon.
I also own a high end-ish stereo and prefer the lossless CDs to the mpegs (but the higher rate MPEGs have gotten better). I still rip them myself to my ipod for travelling music.

My first CD player was a Philips CD204, and my first CD... Something I had to have as CD (already owned as vinyl). Not sure, maybe Supertramp's "Crime of the Century", or Meatloaf's "Bat out of ****". Most recent CD was "Unitopia: One Night in Europe" (awesome). Next CD will probably be Magenta's Metamorphosis.

I do not do lossy compression, so I will keep buying CDs and rip them using a lossless compressor or no compressor at all (disk space is cheap).

I have several Telarc discs- but not CDs. I have about a half dozen classical SACDs from them. Still ticked that neither hi-res format caught on.... And with MP3s having such a strong foothold via iTunes (BOO) and Amazon, I don't see Blu-Ray Audio filling that void either.

I'll definitely remember my first SACD- Dark Side of the Moon. Holy cow.
