If you read this, it looks like the oldest use favors "Ketchup"

A third choice might have been "either".

I was born in the UK. When my family moved to Canada, we were calling it " tomato sauce" Then my dad started to take us on holiday south of the border and I had no idea what catsup was.

You know, for the life of me, I can't remember how it is spelled in Romaji (English) in Japan. In general, if there are two spellings they will go with the British spelling VS US spellings about 50/50. But I "think" they used "ketchup" just because they imported most from the US.

Wiki says catsup was first seen in print by Jonathan Swift. Any way, try HP Sauce for a change of pace.

"Ketchup" just looks more right to me than "catsup".

Here's a better question for you: why are mustard and catsup/ketchup sold by weight, but mayonnaise sold by volume?

                      Catsup or Ketchup?
Depends on the product. Ketchup is supposed to be a tomato based product. Catsup is a different one you get when combining a small feline species and a pitcher like vessel with a motorized blade at the bottom.

Just checked the fridge. We have a bottle Ketchup. That is the way I have alway pronounced it. Now is it made with Tomato's or Tamoto's? or maybe Almond's

I thought that one was a brand name or trademarked and the other was the generic name but in reading about it, it seems that I may not be entirely correct. These people seem to think there are different ingredients behind the different spellings. While these folks seem to believe that the inability to spell lead to the confusion (I can really sympathize with that). Then there is this..... That looks like it was written by Calvin's dad.

edit: I spell it with a c as it's easier to remember cat that ketch and there are 2 fewer letters for my fingers to get mixed up on.

The spellings may differ from users in different locations, but the difference in ingredients seems to be the inclusion of sugar in "ketchup" as one of the primary ingredients, but does not exclude sugar as a lesser ingredient in catsup.
