Houston Area reminder for the Woodworking Shows

Just a reminder, the Woodworking Shows is coming to Houston area this year again on March 30-April 1. its in Katy, TX, straight out I-10 from Downtown.
Much better place for me than the Reliant Area where they used to have it - long drive in heavy traffic plus $8 parking. Now its 5 miles from my house and free parking!

Lots of tools, demos, and shop for bargains in tools and woodworking supplies. THings like casters, jig parts, biscuits, books, router bits, dust collection accessories and fittings, veneers, as well as large tools are available at the show. Maybe we could have a BT3 get-together at the snack bar as we have in the past. Lots of Houston area BT3ers.

Here's a link with some of the exhibitors:

You know they COULD hold the thing at the Pasadena Fairgrounds so those of us in the Bay Area / Galveston County don't have to traipse 50+ miles to get there...

Seriously though, yeah, I will try to get to this years show just to check it out... I really like the Lee Valley booth not just for tools / supplies, but they have some good hand tool demos...

from the other discussion: Bring the wife to TWWS.

Here's the deal for the wife:
              1. if she's got the slightest interest in your Woodworking, then bring her along and she can see the tools at work and see work other people have done and maybe tell you what she likes or wants. Its a different thing with a whole bunch of enthusiasts, many with their wives - can be infectious.
              2. Wives are free, its like 8 or $9 admission for you.
              3. If she gets tired or bored, there is Katy Mills Mall, a really, really big outlet mall just a mile away, real, real easy to get to. With free parking both places she can come and go and pick you up later. Here's a link to Katy Mills Mall outlet stores http://www.simon.com/Mall/?id=1253. When European guests come to visit us on business, they go and stock up at Katy Mills Mall. SHe gets to spend money, you get to spend money (If there's any left)
4 Lots of good eating places East down the Katy Freeway for 5-8 miles or so.

there's some nice new motels right by the mall,

here's a map with the mall on the right (kidney shaped object) and the location of the wood show at the Leonard Merrell Center on the left hand side.

If it wasn't so far, I might go. I might just show up. How do I recognize you guys? Do I look for woodworkers that have keyboard imprints on their fingertips?

Someone at one of the snack area tables will be wearing a BT3 THong... or perhaps just holding a sign. Maybe we'll just be the best looking, best equipped guys at the show. Don't worry, we'll figure it out.

I am afraid that Lee Valley will probably not be there again this year. They weren't there last year either. In fact, most of my friends and myself are not even going this year. We wasted gas going out there last year, only to find that Cooks Woods had very little selection, there was not Lee Valley, and I could almost buy a dovetail router jig from every booth. The selection of companies that are represented are not really that good. And pretty much, it is just the same stuff that they have had for years, but each year, just a little less of it. I really miss when it was at Reliant because they had way more vendors and a much bigger show. Plus, it was easier for more people to get there. You guys have fun, I am staying home. I will put the money that I would have spent on going to get a tool, better value.

FWIW The Milwaukee show was Feb. 10 - 12.

The "Free Spouse" ticket option was not available. The only discount was $2 off regular admission (available at the woodworkingshows website or the reminder postcard for those on the mailing list).

Do look at the newspaper/flyer from the information booth. I didn't look closely until I got home, but the Milwaukee show was offering to upgrade your admission to a 3-day pass for free at the info booth. Had I seen it in time, I certainly would have gone back the next day.

Lee Valley was in Milwaukee and I will say the show was better (better seminars) than the previous two years.

It used to be free to military, firefighters, police. That was extended to include retired of the same. I will have to see if that is still the policy.
