    tilley hats

anyone here own a Tilley hat, made in canada? seems to have a very loyal following.

almost bought one on last two or three vacations - the last one not, because they didn't have my size. Looking at their website www.tilley.com, they have lots of styles and now I'm confused which to get.

Don't own one, but have tried them on many times in a so-far fruitless search for a model that fits and looks right. I like hats, but something about the shape of my Size 8 noggin makes finding a suitable one tough. Many (all?) Tilleys have a double-layer crown for flotation, which is a complication in my particular case.

REI carries them, if you have a store nearby and want another firsthand look.

          Don,

If you go through hats try thelastbestwest.com. I've purchased two hats over the last 30 years. One was a Charley 1 Horse and the last was a custom design by The Last Best West. It's a 100X, pure beaver and really stands up to hard use. I've done the Stetson, Baily, American, etc. Nothing stood the test of time but the Charley 1 Horse. They got bought out by, I think American Hat, late in the last century when most of the top names were gathered up by one company. When it was broken down and just plain wore out I went looking for what is probably the last hat I'll buy, just turning 65, and discovered the Last Best Cowboy Hat. Pricey, but you amortize it over 20 years plus and it's darned cheap. Works out to $30.00 bucks a year. The quality and hand made construction make the hats works of art.

Sorry to sound like an ad, but it's a really quality hat.

I bought a Tilley hat for my dad a couple of years ago. He thinks it's the best hat he's ever worn. He also tested their lifetime warranty when it lost it's shape after washing. They replaced his hat without any hassle

I own 3. The first is plain, just has the breeze option - it has been through a lot. Held up pretty good sticking my head into pine trees looking for geocaches.

The second is the winter hat option - around here that translates to late autumn and early spring.

Then there is the new one with snaps to fold up the brim on either side (or both) for the Aussie look. That one I'm keeping super clean to wear to caching events as my "good" hat.

You have been warned - you can't buy just one!

                    Jaybee, thanks for your answer.

by the "breeze option" do you mean you have the nylamtium (Nylon) with the vent at top or the Cotton Duck version?

I have one, purchased right before a trip to Africa. It offers more protection for my neck and ears than the baseball caps I usually wear and it travels well. It was comfortable, even in Namibia's 90 degree days, and it stayed on my head.

Even with the vent, the sweat band is not a luxury extra. Wash the sweat out early and often or it will really stain.

I love my Tilley. Fits well, looks good and is practically indestructible. It's been subjected to gallons of sweat, clorinated pools, washing cycles, wadded and stuffed in a back-pack, etc.. Still looks new. If I lost it, I would buy another that same day.

                          I prefer nylon.

I own two, a Nylantium with a mesh crown (not just the mesh band; the whole thing is sun blocking mesh. My newest is a black wool winter hat. I bought both with the widest brims I could—after having melanoma on my head I'm pretty hard-core about wearing a hat in the sun.

My Dr. suggests NO baseball caps; she says keeping the sun off my ears and nose is a very good thing.

Tilleys are pricey, but well built and if mine disappeared I'd replace them in a heartbeat.

They are sized a bit differently than most hats. Tilley's web site suggests that you measure your head just above the eyebrows and level all the way around, then use that measurement to find the right size on their chart. If you can just fit two fingers between your forehead and the hat band, that's the right size. At first they feel WAY too big, but I got used to that pretty quickly and now other hats feel too tight.

                            Just my 4¢ worth…
