    Dreams realized....

Rand's thread on his Honda S2000 got me to thinking. How many have fulfilled a longtime dream for a particular vehicle?

For me it was a Harley-Davidson Dresser.

I grew up around my uncles' Harleys and can only remember 2 pictures of my Grandfather. One was taken in our den and the other was astride his old DuoGlide. The first bike I rode was a Harley 175 dirt bike with a 250 motor swapped into it.

I have owned a number of rice burners over the years but always wanted to buy a 'Glide. A couple of years ago, after 8 years off of motorcycles, I bought an 800 cc Suzuki Boulevard. Nice little bike for around town but soon proved to be too little. I sold it in April last year and picked up my Harley 3 days later.

It is an '02 Electraglide Classic that I got for about $4,000 under book. I knew it would need a bit of work and have spent about $1,000 beyond normal maintenance (Tires, brakes, oil changes, etc). The latest was to replace the stock cams with a set of slightly more agressive ones from S&S Cycles. It now has a lot more torque over stock, especially in the lower ranges up to around 3,000 RPM.

It's in progress. But my '04 F150 XLT 4x4 has been a long time drool for me. Not necessarily this body style, as I originally wanted an 84 Super Cab 4x4, but being a broke kid at the time... The bigger part of the dream is about to come to pass... My final payment will be in December (I bought it as a lease return.)

The next stage is lift, lockers, gears, new rubber, a winch, and a leather interior conversion...

As it sits now... Admittedly, the front tires are no longer in that good shape... I need shocks, and my fronts are paying the price, a steep one too... Those tires cost me $950.00!

I have two trucks, a Ford Ranger and a GMC Sierra SLT. Opposite ends of the spectrum. I obtained my (or my primary) dream car when I was 16, and would probably still have it, if I hadn't been hit by that city truck. (his admitted fault, he rear ended me, never seen so many cops so fast)
When I worked in the garage, I had the opportunity to see and drive many cars, and was offered the chance to buy several (from another 68 Cutlass, to a Porsche 944). I couldn't justify them, nor in the case of the former, could I relive the best parts of the past.
After being hit by an uninsured motorist (screwed up my S15), I was vehicle poor. Down at the shop was a Ranger, that belonged to a customer, that came down with a "why is it making that noise" question (driving on 1 quart of oil). After sitting down there, for three months we finally got a hold of him and he said he was going to take it to the junk yard. I bought it, put a junk yard motor in it that I went over (timing belt, water pump, gaskets, etc), that had 40K on it (rear ended Ranger), then did brakes, clutch, shocks, general once over everything else, and put it back together. That had been the closest to a dream for me of building a car. Of course that dream tended to die when your working on fixing other peoples problems (and learning what and how expensive some stuff is)
I have a friend whose grandkid is going to be 16 next year. He wants to trade me a VW (bug or beetle, I am not sure which), for my Ranger. That was a popular modding car when I was a kid, gets decent gas mileage, and would be a halfway decent backup vehicle, that would also fit in my garage (built for a model A or T). It is in decent shape (not perfect, belonged to a friend of his who was redoing it when he died), so I am tempted. I know it needs sideboards, and probably a wiring harness (he had soldered up wires, using the old after redoing the engine) and I believe to finish fine tuning it (what he was in the process of when he died), and paint (body is sound).
Just arguing with myself about it.

My wife has wanted a Volvo since she was twelve. In June we celebrated our 25th anniversary with a trip to London and a side trip to Gottenberg Sweden to tour the Volvo factory. We came home with a 2011 XC70. I on the other hand drive a used Hyundai Sonata.

          Sweet Ride

          Don,

That is one sweet ride, a little too "decked out" for my taste, but any Hog is sweet.

Makes me wish I never cracked up my 1947 Indian hard tail with springer front forks kicked out 14 inches. Tank shift, suicide clutch. Rode it to Mexico and back and pissed blood for a few weeks, but that was part of the "experience". This was prior to helmet laws and Cycle licenses and all the other junk the Govt thought up to keep you from having fun.

Somewhere, there's a photo of me and the bike. If I ever find it, I'll post it.
It'll be fun seing me with hair (long) again.

My story too. I haven't had a Harley yet, and been thinkin' I might give one a try. Most all my bikes have been Jap cafe or dressers. I'm not climbing the walls for one, but would like to satisfy that curiosity.

I've been very fortunate in my work to get pretty much what I want. My real excitement...even more than any of the bikes, was my first Porsche 911. At the time that was an "arrival" so to speak. It was as much a benefit as a hindrance pulling up for an estimate. Either the client was impressed, or thought I was too expensive.

Then the 911 became history after my first drive in a 930 Turbo. I had to have it. What a car. With that car I always took the longest route to the shop, well...anywhere really.

Mine haven't been fulfilled yet. Someday I will have a '69 Dodge Daytona or a '70 Superbird (with the HEMI).

The way things are going now, I probably won't be able to drive by the time I can afford one...

I should mention one other "dream" car that I would love to own one day. A 1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500. I have always loved the Mustang, but the 1967 GT500 is my favorite hands down. It will have to wait. When we dig out of this debt hole we are in, we are going to chunk cash aside for a while and pick up a lease return for LOML. We are most likely going with a Lincoln MKS in Crystal Champagne with the EcoBoost engine f we can find one.

Sorry, I may have imports in my shop, but none in my driveway... I really like American cars. I'm a big guy, and nothing from any Asian MFG is anywhere near as comfortable as American iron. And the European stuff is just way too expensive to keep...

I bought my dream car when I got out of the Army in 1964. I paid $3200.00 for a brand new 1964 GTO. It figured out to be a dollar a pound. I also bought a 1969 GTO. It was not nearly the car the 64 was.

I then went on to a Porsche 914, three MBZ's, a 6 series BMW, and two late model Ford Thunderbirds. I now drive a 1996 two door RAV4. It has 180k+ miles on it. I now revel in my low annual cost of driving and maint.

Mine was a Fiat 124 Spyder convertible. Bought it new in 1970 and kept it until it got rear-ended by a woman in a station wagon while it was parked along the street. Had a chance to take it out on the track at BIR. Dang, that was fun!

I thought the same thing until I got into my Acura. Wow, mind blown.

I've been a car nut forever and had a bunch of fun toys.. Triumph TR6, TR7, GT6, BMW 325i convertible, 350Z, Infinti G35 Coupe.

I always wanted a pony car. So, I decided to get the modern reincarnation before the American V8's go extinct. Here is my 2010 Mustang GT 5 speed, glass roof, electronics package, track package, comfort package, 19 wheels.

Not sure that this is my "dream" car but I always wanted a "hot rod." She has a 350sb, 700R4 tranny, a 12 bolt rear end with 373 gears and she's a daily driver.
