After a long chat with apple this morning, it turns out that the spring 2010 Macbook Pro has a problem switching graphics modes under Lion and it causes the crashes. They recommended turing off the performance switching which should prevent the crashes but I'll be running with the high performance graphics on all the time which will kill battery life.
I've been crashing twice a day since I loaded Lion, and only under MacOS, windows 7 works fine.

I heard Quicken won't work on Lion, is it true? I'm looking into other financial management software.
That is true as Intuit has basically refused to keep updating, upgrading and writing native code for pure OS X usage. This has been an ongoing gripe for Quicken users on the Mac side for years. Intuit knows the problem but just too lazy to do the development. They don't feel it is worth it to them and have left Mac users out to dry. It is not something sudden nor something that Apple has done.
