    Thoughts on home automation...

I have been getting the itch lately to dive into home automation. Specifically lighting, and HVAC functions. I can find plenty of info on thermostats etc... for the home system, but what about portable unit in my shop? It's remote controlled, and I was wondering if it is possible to maybe find some sort of network enabled universal remote for this? (preferrably WEP enabled WiFi network enabled... I don't want to run Cat-5 to the shop...).

Anyone done this before and if so do you have any hints on where I can start? It would be nice to be able to start my A/C say an hour or so before I want to start working in the shop, even if I am grocery shopping at the time...

Probably the remote for it is infrared (room-distances, line of sight) and not a good candidate for remote whole house control, maybe not even a standard coding. Better to have the A/C on a remote controlled switch like X-10 and just turn it on to a preset temperature.

It sounds like you need to use that tried and true home automation system called..... children.

Is your remote IR based? If so, you could find a cheap wireless router with USB or a serial port header that supports DD-WRT, Tomato, etc, add an IR blaster, and control it with LIRC. Of course X-10 probably would be easier if you just wanted to be able to turn it on/off without controlling any other settings or features.

Software to crack WEP is readily available. You should really switch to WPA.
