We don't have a room that was purpose built as such.

However, there is a storage area in the basement that is under the front step/porch area. It's a 10x10 space, below grade with poured concrete walls for all but about 3 feet worth of that perimeter (then 2x6 framed for insulation) and a 12"+ concrete "ceiling" (again also framed). A tornado large enough to rip the top two stories away could then perhaps cause some damage down there, but it's probably the best protection of anywhere I've lived, so I'm not looking to make any improvements.

I have had 1 twister touch down 400 ft from my house, cutting a 50 yard path through the woods for 1/2 mile and another within 1 mile of the house destroying and damaging a number of houses. We get tornados on a regular basis, but nothing like the ones we are seeing in Oklahoma and Mo. A metal storm shelter is on the drawing board. There are very few basements in this flatlands. My house is on a raised monolythic slab so it is a good candidate for a large workbench size metal box anchored to the slab. The internet has a fair offering of this type of metal storm shelter for those interested.
