    removing IE from computer

I have IE 9 on my computer and would like to remove it and all other version from my Win7 computer. I have chrome and it works much better. I have looked in Control Panel under remove programs and can't find it. I am just tired of dealing with its quirks on this computer. IE 8 works fine on my laptop but 8 and 9 have problems on my desktop.

According to Microsoft, IE is an integral part of the operating system. If you want to remove IE from a PC, your only real option is to change operating systems to something like Linux, BSD, Solaris x86 etc...

Now having said that, it all depends on how fed up you are with the flaky behavior of Windows. There are some excellent Linux distributions these days that even Grandma can install and run without much trouble at all. Ubuntu springs to mind for general, don't want to dig into the guts of the thing desktop stuff. If you are wanting to take real control over your machine, I would go with Red Hat Enterprise Linux, or one of its recompile clones. I myself am running Scientific Linux 6 (a RHEL 6 recompile clone) and love it. If you want something between brain dead easy, and mad scientist full control, give Mandriva a good look see...

I have UBUNTU on my Netbook and it works great for as much as I have used it. Win7 seem to work OK other than IE on this computer. I have chrome on here so will switch over to it as I have access to all my Email accounts and bookmarks. Since I retired I am not a geeky as I once was had Red Hat on another box a few year ago but had problems dealing with the jargon and geek talk. Maybe I will dig out the Netbook and play with UBUNTU on it before trying on desktop. Thanks for the information and suggestions. I am looking at getting a new box here in a couple of months anyway and that would be a good time to change of the OS.

There are a few things that I have tried to do with different browsers and some of it cannot be done without IE.
Downloads of just about anything from Microsoft and a few other places. I don't recall specifics on the other sites.
I just try to ignore IE until I need it.

          Try this for IE8 : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700

          and this for IE9 : http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/w...net-explorer-9

I was gonna say I think removing IE from a Windows computer requires an exorcism, but apparently even that's not enough.

Thanks for the links. IE9 is gone and IE8 will be soon.

There's always something invariably that involves IE for it's use, so I leave it. It doesn't take up much resources while not running and it's there for when I need it again.

I'm curious why the need to remove IE? I don't use IE on my home computer, but, I didn't see an overwhelming reason to remove it from the computer. I just set Firefox as the default browser.

Agree. Just try to ignore IE. The Windows OS will go berserk if you delete IE. I use Chrome and gmail. Just make sure that IE is NOT your default internet browser.

There were problems that croped up with error messages saying the IE had encounterd problems and would shut down and then it would restore the page I was one. It also would hang while watch a You Tube video that some one sent me. That and upper left Red X that started showing up in Email pictures. What i have done is to remove bothe IE 8 & 9 and reinstall IE9 incase I need it. Will use Google Chome as my defalut browser. I think Win7 and IE8 were getting like me, old and loosing it's way.

Thanks for all the help guys I appriciated it. I amazed my Grand Kids when the were visiting not to long ago when I brought out my Tandy 1000, small color monitor and dot matrix printer and showed them how it use to be. Dos 2.11 two floppies, 640K memory and Basic. My oldest grandson (10) wants to learn how to use it this summer when comes out to spend a month, he thinks it cool and to think a 20mb hard drive for that was $800 and you had to upgrade the bios chip (replace it) I remember when I installed and programed the modem and ran up a $359 long distance bill the first month. How time have changed.

I am a bit surprised that you can uninstall IE. Microsoft has been claiming since Windows 95 that Internet explorer is an integrated component of Windows... That is the argument they made during a good number of their anti trust cases both domestically, and internationally...

On the times have changed. My first computer was a Ti 99/4a with a tape drive.

I never did much with that... However my next machine, was an Atari 1200XL, with 2 5.25" floppy drives, Hayes 2400 baud modem, and an Okidata dot matrix printer. It had AtariDOS of I don't recall version, and much of the software for it was delivered on ROM cartridges that installed in the cartridge slots similar to the Atari 2400 game console. The first program I wrote was a sort of ASCII Frogger clone. Actually I input it, I didn't write it per se. The code was in a copy of Antic magazine... But I digress a bit too far now...

I must admit you made me nostalgic for the old 8 bit stuff... I wonder if I can find Dig Dug somewhere...

Very topical : just today they announced the end of the Federal antitrust oversight of MS. And that was possible because MS had agreed to make it easier (& possible) to uninstall IE from the OS.

Installed IE8 & 9. Went window update and install IE 9. Every thing seem to be back like it should be. It hasn't crapped yet even when going to new page from an Email or link. Thanks for all the help, now to find my books on Basic so I can teach my Grandson. Got A's in it when I went College at night during the mid 80's haven't used it since Window came about but Grandson thought it was neat and fun.

No it isn't enough. I at one time tried every available "fix" to remove IE from a windows install. Still it persisted and when some other program called it directly it reared it's ugly head. According to "experts" it is removable but things like updates will then fail to function correctly. There is a windows update module (add on) for firefox but I have never tested it. I do all my internet related stuff under Linux and reserve Windows for gaming and music related applications. I have never had one of my Linux installs hacked by a virus or malware.
