A Close Call For All Of Us!

Earthquakes, tsunami, nuclear meltdown, all pale by what I nearly experienced today....

I picked up a used engine for my Ram yesterday and knowing there are going to be a few things to do to get it ready to drop in I decided to buy an engine stand. Armed with a cart printout that included a 20% of online coupon and a sale price I was off to HF to pick up this.

    http://www.harborfreight.com/1000-lb...and-32916.html

In a moment of pure insanity, I decided to actually read the directions rather than just go by the pictures. They were clear, in good English, easy to follow, and seemed to be complete. I did initially skip step 2, which was assembly of the engine mount/pivot plate, until after the complete assembly of the base.

After rading the section that said to test to make sure it rolled freely, the typical HF direction syndrome finally hit me....nowhere was there any mention of installing the rear wheels.

Until that moment of realization, I thought for sure that the world as we know it had come to an end and we had been somehow transported to a parallel universe.

What? The BT3 saws have only two wheels - you just lift the other side and wheelbarrow it, right? HF obviously expects BT3 owners to do the same with engines stands! Plus, with only two wheels, the HF stand won't roll down sloped garage floors/driveways on its own - it's a safety thing.

Last time I moved my BT3 it didn't have a 750# engine bolted to it.....

The installation of the rear wheels was probably included in Step #2 (the one you skipped).

                If it's the 5.2 or 5.9, probably.

Oh, and engine stands with blocks on them and air hoses don't get along real well. DAMHIK.

Why did you need the wheels? You read the directions on the engine STAND, not the engine roller.

I see that the instructions say, "3. Do not attempt to move the Stand when under load. The Caster (#13) is not designed to be rolled when the Stand is supporting a heavy weight. If you need to move the engine, you must transfer it to an approved, appropriate moving device such as an engine hoist."

I suppose the wheels are only for moving the empty stand.

The 360 cu in / 5.9 l does! And that is the gas engine. The 5.9 diesel is heavier.

I didn't read that far. Moving it with the engine mounted can be done but, trust me, it ain't easy...

Yeah, but that would solve the 13 vs 15 amp motor dilemma (a la Tim the Toolman)
